fussy eater ... only a complaint

Just annoyed tonight, sorry, just feel like letting off some small steam - bought some herbal supplement for my horse as she has been coughing and thought it would be good to help her immune system but now she is being fussy and doesnt touch her feeds with it. What a stupid animal she is eating cider vinegar with no probs whereas these herbs smell gorgeous...

try putting things like carrot peelings and parsnip peelings. Normally works when trying to get some horses at my yard to eat bute as to get the carrot they have to eat the feed or try soem apple juice

I had exact thing with my boy and a herbal respiratory supplement. He would rather starve than eat it no matter what I put in his feed.

Then I statred making his feed up the day before with a little bit in and increasing it over a couple of days, till he was on the right dose. I think if you make the feeds in advance some of the taste/smell has dispersed so they dont notice a little bit. This worked for me at the start of the winter now he eats it with no problems and his breathing is good

You aren't the only one, I've given away loads of "poisonous" supplements

Have you thought of trying single herbs? I've found that Jim will refuse to eat a mix if there's one ingredient he doesn't like but at least if I'm mixing it myself I can find which one he dislikes & feed the others.

ETA I find a lot of companies are quite happy to send samples if you explain the problem.

that sounds like a plan, I make up feeds in advance on weekdays anyway, so iwll give it a go together with some other extras maybe. She did not even like her carrots on top of the feeds though, haha. Will see tonight if she has eaten during the night or not ...

Take a cheap cheese grater up the yard and grate apple and carrot - I find i can get my boys to eat most things that way!
