Hi H&H's. My TB has been poorly recently and been on noradine antibiotics however has had an allergic reaction to it. My vet has switched him onto a different antibiotic which is the consistency of olive oil and I'm struggling to get it down as he is unbelievably fussy when it is put into his feed. Won't touch it even with molasses, carrots, apples and all sorts added! I tried to administer it directly into his mouth with a syringe but it just isn't thick enough to stay in!! Anyone have any tips?! TIA!

It should stay in a syringe, water will so no reason something a bit thicker will not, I recently had the same issue syringing 50mls twice daily as horse would not eat it and had no problems loading the syringe, you could mix it with something like apple sauce to thicken it but it will be more to get down his throat, 50mls was more than enough in one go.

Just reread and wondered if it is keeping it in his mouth that is the issue, in that case get his head up as you put it in and massge his throat so he has no option but to swallow.

What size syringe do you have? You need a large size with a long nozzle so you can get it further back on the tongue. Mix with apple sauce or syrup or molasses to give it some sticking power. Im guessing you mean it just runs out of his mouth?
I'm giving mine theirs at the moment in a sweet mix with a lot of molasses added...I'm talking about a good half pint each. Its the only way, despite both foodstuffs normally being something I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Apples and carrots aren't strong enough to disguise antibiotics ime.

Thanks for the tips! Yep it's keeping it in his mouth that I'm struggling with. Might try to get his head up high and do it that way. He is a pro at wormers so thought trying to get it to that consistency would make it easier!
