Did futurity yesterday and our score shows two stars at the end. I know they mean high score but what does that mean.
Loved the vet and she LOVED our yearling and gave her 9
Found evaluation not so good as they hardly speak to you. We got a slightly negative comment for walk, which we expected as she was a bit tense. Lovely comments for trot and canter, which were deserved as she looked fabulous. Then they gave her a higher mark for walk than the other two paces (strange). Ended up with 8.44
We were told by alot of people not to take a yearling and I can see why as mostly foals get elites.
Still very pleased with her.
Had blow out in front tyre on motorway on way home and as we had an hours wait she called the vet to sedate. So not the best day. Still got home safely

It means that you were the highest score of your section (I'm assuming eventing so the best eventing yearling presented on the day). 1 star is reserve high score - so second in section. There are higher marked horses above you because they were judged in different sections. There are sections for each age group and each discipline - including a sub-section for sports ponies I believe (denoted by sp after the name). Well done on your result! :)

It does seem that most elites go to foals, and the impression I get is that dressage foals are easier to give high marks to, but there are obvious exceptions. Although the majority are foals the top score is an event foal by Chilli Morning with all the disciplines represented fairly evenly through the whole band of elites and there are other age groups in there too. Only 1 endurance elite, but this is still nice to see as I think it may be a first? Of the top 10 scores though 7 are dressage, 6 are foals and 1 is a pony - don't know what can be concluded from this? This is just from a first glance - I'm sure someone with more time will produce an actual analysis and prove me wrong!

I think it is easier to judge a dressage foal than a jumping foal.....you can see general confirmation, but judging range of movement is there. Judging a jumping foal.....their future ability really is their jump......which cannot be assessed. All that can be judged is movement, general type and general attitude.

There may be more elite foals but there are more foals presented . Also we see foals presented by the breeders so a huge range of quality. The top foals are then sold on and often ' lost' to the futurity scheme. The numbers coming forward after their foal age group is also reduced.
Same goes for the dissaplines, endurance is still very small in numbers hence the low number of elites.
As for not being able to judge show jumpers and it being all about the jump I'm afraid I don't agree. Many of the show jumpers presented are not of the correct conformation in terms of type and or strength, ie angular limb deformities etc. ( wont hold up to the rigors of jumping . Many simply don't have a good enough canter ! Something the vet doesn't see!
Cart horse as for your yearling I think the marks show you have a very nice horse to build on for the future. I don't understand why you think it was strange you get a better mark for the walk? If the judges felt it showed quality but pointed out that they recognised the tension but that there was quality in the walk that deserved praise. ( its understandable to see some tension and therefore not disregard because of this.)
Hope that helps

Glad you had a better experience than I did!!
Some of it was futurity and some of it was my colts, some mine should have got there earlier etc.. but our luck was out from the beginning of the week we were supposed to be going.

Its not sour grapes he got wound up didnt track up and shuffled his way around the arena meaning he really didnt show himself off to what he really is. Though some of the comments I didnt really understand and I couldnt hear what they were saying really as it was on loud speaker and from my sheet compared to what I thought I heard they say didnt match.. anyway we lived, embarrassed myself rather and ruined a white top lol
