You guys must be able to help. I have a beautiful mare with one problem. An unruly fuzzy kinky mane. What is the best way to get it sleak and straight like the show jumpers. I need to be able to plait it, so dont like the idea of thinning with thinning scissors it as they leave loads of spikey bits. Is the best way to pull it? Can you get leave in conditioners to stop it looking so frizzy? We want to go to competitions and training looking good not like a fuzzy bear.
Cheers

My welsh has got a very thick frizzy mane when bathing for shows we leave in conditioner - however might be a bit slippery for plaiting - other option is ghd's

if its super frizzy i doubt it will ever go straight and smooth when dry...so instead i would just always plait for comps - plait while it is wet...put in lots of hair spray/gel?? lol

not sure really...mine's mane is sooo easy! just lies flat and straight lol. erm...id deffos ytry LOADS of conditioner...plaiting while wet might work...you could give it a try

oh!! almost forgot...dont they sell lots of those types of ''plaiting gel's'' and sprays?? you could try some of them possibly? sorry im not much help :S

I use Johnsons baby gel with camomile on my horse before plaiting, smells nice and it's good for them! Otherwise, run over it with a comb/brush daily to keep it flat and use conditioner (My horse is a gelding - I think I may be giving him issues!).

Do you think straightners would work, or would they damage the horses mane. Might be an option my mum has an old pair of GHDs...

Give it a good pull first, and then see what it is like. My horses manes are always very smoth and on one side over the winter, as they wear neck covers. In the summer they go a bit more 'all over the place', but as long as they are well pulled it is easy with some mane and tail shine to get them all glossy and smooth again.

Don't apply JUST before a show though, as makes the mane v slippy to plait for a few days.
