Wondering if any dressage buffs can help. I did my first novice test last week (N25) and the comments sheet said did not Give and retake reins for long enough and underlined 'see BD dressage rules'. Does anyone know what the rule is as regards give and retake of the reins? Is there a minimum number of strides I have to do it for?

I don't have the BD rule book so hoping someon knows. thanks.

Not sure what the rule is but I usually gradually give and retake over about 3 strides and have never been told not enough. You might have done it a bit too abruptly perhaps?

You need to give and retake for 3-4 strides, and you have to make sure you clearly show the give so there is a clear drop in contact. Some people will lift their hands, hoping the judge won't notice but many of them will and know this trick!!

But also make sure the G&R is gradual

Frim memory think it just states something like -

Give and Retake

This requires the rider to push both hands forward to release the contact and then re-take it. This should be one continuous movement.

Don't think it specifies how long.

Thanks all - very helpful. When watching myself on video what I thought was a gradual give and retake was more of a panicked 'throw and snatch' LOL. The beauty of video. Thanks for your replies - I will go away and work on it ;-)

I just say to myself (in my head) nice and steadily " I am giving, I'm re-taking", whilst doing the corresponding action. That seems to get the timing about right.
