just wondering about gag because i need to know about them for my abrs test 6 and 7.

when placed on one of the rings below the main ring (if you get what i mean) it applies poll pressure aswel as pressure in the mouth?

that make sense to anybody??

and the lower the ring, the more pressure applied to the poll??

any replies welcome, and if you can explain it clearer that would be great too

The rings below the main ring apply poll pressure and are stronger on a 3-ring or dutch gag. The more poll pressure the stonger the bit so if you were to put the reins on the bottom ring it would be stronger, sorry not very good at explaining things, someone can probably explain it a lot better than me!

The way the poll pressure in a gag works is the same as in a pelham the longer the shanks the more pressure will be applied. If an amaerican gag is used instead of say a 3 ring gag, since the shanks are much much larger then there is more influence on the poll.....a slightly different way to explain it than how nomini said (all means the same) but hers may be easier to understand.

yes the further down the bit you go (im assuming your talking about a dutch gag here) the more leverage there is and hence more pressure put on the pool. I have never used a dutch gag on the bottom ring as i find they are far to strong - hence why i have a three ring as apposed to a four ring.

there are variouis other members of the gag family though which all have different effects on the horses mouth!

Well I am leadto believe it differs between gags. Idont believe a dutch or an american gag can actually be called a true gag, as the poll action is limited, and correctly worn should require a curb chain, whereas the Cheltenam Gag has no curb and is giving a lifting action. Really im no good at explaining the action it gives, butboth dutch&american only give a limited poll pressure because leverage can only go so far.
