right well a few on here might remember a few weeks ago me posting on here how you would you go about treating mud fever. i thought i knew how to treat it, and i just needed some clarification. i have told Frankie's owner a while ago about his mud fever, and she told me not to pick the scabs off or even touch them because his old rider picked them off, and make them sore. i told her that would probably be because she didnt loosen the scabs and they pulled the skin.

anywhoo she told me not to pick anything so i respected her wishes.

then, last night, she turns around and says 'im going to get some udder cream for Frankie's scabs, and see if i can pull some scabs off tomorrow'. ang on a minute - did i or did i not say to you a few weeks back to do that??????

why can't she trust my judgment???

GAH i know he's her horse but i can't stand it how she dismisses what i suggest one week, then because someone else tells her to do the same thing she does it.

Maybe she did take on board what you said - and digested it, and came to her decision. Well done you.

Advice her to get udder SALVE rather than the cream. It's far more effective.

I always find hibi scrub and warm water is a good option, really softens the scabs if you rub it in long enough, then towel dry and plaster in chosen cream, i use gold label mud gaurd. My frankie has had one patch of mud fever on his hind leg that just keeps coming back, but he does get turned out for about 10 hours every day regardless of the weather!

wowza amymay- maybe you're right! maybe she did and it just took a few weeks

*makes mental note to mention salve as opposed to cream*

whats the difference? is it more waterproof?

They're both waterproof. But we have found that the salve has more stickability and a wonderful healing and soothing property.

Makes a hideous mess - but put it on and the scabs will come away quite quickly with gentle rubbing (a day or so after repeated application).
