Have just got my new Wintec Wide in and it doesn't fit!!!!! He measures off the gauge with a normal Wintec and I keep getting told it is too far back so I bought the Wintec Wide - Its STILL going right back and the pommel is nearly touching his withers when I get on. His shoulders are absolutely huge and so the saddle slides right back (but still restricts him) and then it tips me slightly forward

I will get the saddler out to fit it (but he won't be pleased as I didn't buy it off him as he charges £75 more) but has anyone else had this sort of problem and overcome it or had I better get used to riding bareback?

Sounds like it is too wide now tbh! If you can put it up a size, it should sit up a bit more, and then not sit down on withers and slide back.

wintec wide?is this not a cob one?think cob version has different cut to shoulders.
i have a wide cob and a `throwogood cob `wide saddle.(didn`t need the x wide!)it fits very well.
what type is your horse?

I only really wanted one as I have been happy with the one I've had and since his operation he has filled out massively and I liked the idea of being able to change the width of the saddle - I also like the Cair panels. Having said that I would be open to other suggestions - I have tried a treeless one but I didn't like the lack of contact for my knees.

As previously said it sounds as if you need a narrower gullet in if it's almost touching his withers.

At one point last year I had both a Wintec Wide and a Thorowgood XXW cob saddle for my boy. I preferred the Wintec on appearance really but it did slip back.

Saddler came out and checked both and advised me to keep the Thorowgood as it was a better fit - which I have.

A year later and lots of hard work horse has lost a lot of weight, Thorowgood saddle has been adjusted down to XW and thickest FISH insert is in!

Have you tried a Saddle Company one. They do seem to fit this type of shape much better than the Wintecs, plus they are much better for adjustments.

I have a Wintec, worst thing I ever bought., Horse ended up with sore back from the Cair panels (my saddler down here was disgusted to find I have a wintec as well as my other saddle), bl00dy things never fit properly.

What I also don't like is that you can only change the size of the front of the saddle so the back will always be a medium. V odd.

I spoke to Wetherbeeta ages ago, who are the Wintec agents in the UK, and they actuallly said "you'd be better buying a good made to measure Ideal or Albion"!!

Your horse looks more like it needs a 'warmblood' type of cut, something that not only allows for width and barrel, but also fits that wither (which is too high for a conventional wide saddle)

Isn't the lovely Bomber looking well?

I don't think he looks at all fat or too wide, and as others have said, the saddle sounds too wide for him. I had a Wintec with Cair and it tipped back, and we had a rear riser pad. But my saddle fitter (who didn't fit it originally, a different one did) said it never fitted him, and no Wintec would ever do. The pad made it 'bridge' too, and damaged his back. I have an Ideal with Flair now, which fits very well, and is of course adjustable if he changes shape with the seasons. I got it second hand. Perhaps you could find one like that?

I had to have a saddle made to measure for Spring as although she looks 'normal' (lol!) she was wider than a standard XW with big shoulders. Nothing really fitted. Sorry probably not much help! Saddle comapny saddles do have a good reputation though.

I found the Wintec Wide the only saddle to fit my Welsh Cob, I love it, fits great!

You'll simply have to see what the saddler advises Im afraid. Or you could fork out for a WOW which they'll basically make for your horse!

Thats just what I was going to say, he's not got typical cob withers (ie none lol), but is still round and flat like a cob - probably why the cob/wide won't fit

Agree with Chex & the Watcher - your horse is not conventionally wide as he has a wither. I think your only solution is to have a leather saddle fitted, you may be lucky & find a s/h one but seems unlikely

I don't think wintec's fit many horses really well. Echo whats been said above re his withers, I think you need to try some iddfent makes on him. Have you tried a wow (I know they are more expensive) but they are very flexible, and will allow for his shoulder.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I telephoned the saddler today and had a chat with him, went back and measured where the saddle fit and he came up as an extra wide. It looks a lot better on and he went really well today, with a lovely outline so I think he is happier. My instructor said it will be OK on him until we build his back muscles up more - then I will get the saddler out to fit one. I don't think I will go for another Wintec.

I don't think that Wintec saddles are the problem, like all saddles they should be fitted by a saddler and they don't suit every horse or pony. My pony's Wintec fits her fine, (she's in a wide gullet), my horse had to have a made to measure Ideal event as his shoulders and flat back make him hard to fit.

I have a Wintec saddle with two gullet change blue and black,(that I'm selling-p,m me) but kept doing the same thing moving back, got the saddle fitter down and cus my mare has big shoulders he told me that the wintec was no good for her at this moment in time. so now have a nice leather one.

Have you considered treeless? I bought a barefoot one - said to fit 95% of all horses recently and am so pleased with it. Very comfortable to ride in - I have the dressage version and it fits either Chancer - 15 hand cob or Cairo - 16.3 clydesdale.

Cairo loves this saddle - never known the old boy to go so well in the school.

For me, the best thing is that I know it will adapt to Chancer as he grows and I won't be out each year trying to find a saddle to fit.

I know quite a few people with cobs that are going treeless now.

I cannot see me changing out of treeless for Chancer - have even found a very nice show version if he goes well under the saddle later in life.
