Our landlord has said if we want to we can fit a dog flap on the back door so that puppy has access to the garden when needed. As OH and I do work during the day (OH works shifts and work a 5 min walk from home) the dog is going to be alone for part of the day, for the first six or so months I don't plan for this to be longer that three hours. (Any longer and he can go round to our retired in-laws for the day!)

When he gets a bit older, would it be worth getting a little run from the back door to the garden? I honestly can't remember what our garden looks like but the current tennants leave their dog out with no issue (he was there when we viewed the property). I know terriers are diggers, are they too likely to dig out if left unsupervised?

Plan is once dog is settled he will get free rein of the kitchen (where the back door is) when we are out, do we need to put child locks on the cupboards?

if he is a raider then i would put child locks on the cupboards! i can leave betty in the kitchen with no problems, but know someone who's dog raided the cupboard and ate EVERYTHING! she was a sick doggy! :p

regarding the run- we have a kennel and run in the garden for Betty- made from 4 pannels of security fencing. it needs to be paved/concrete base for easy cleaning, and this should stop him tunneling out. as its only a wee dog you wouldnt need to worry as much about jumping out- but either way- we have the kennel in the middle so she cant use it as a platform for escape!

its actually a lot bigger than it needs to be, but nevermind!

I would also suggest a roof to your run as some bored doggies have been known to turn their skills to learning to climb mesh wire!

Not sure if Whisp & Willows security panels are fastened to the ground in some way, but I personally would prefer fencing with posts concreted in and the fencing wire tucked in below the paving slabs! Not so much for dogs breaking out but rather others breaking in and stealing my dogs.

CCTV is a must IMO if you are leaving dogs home alone outside where ne'erdowells could access them. This is sad, but unfortunately a fact of life.....certainly in the gundog world. :(

yes- if Betty were built to climb we'd have put a roof on! ;) but she's not the most gracefull... or nimble... heavy bulldog! :p

the panels are sunken into the ground using postcrete, and supported by the existing fence on two sides. We postcrete-d in another post as a support for the other two panels. To make the gate we used a bit of pipe postctete-d into the ground, and slotted the base of the panel in there to make a hinge, and atatched a hasp to secure the gate on the post. was very cheap to set up, and only took the day, with a bit of help from a couple of friends. Also considering its made of security panels it actually looks quite smart. (or at least i think so!)

i was originaly worried about her being out alone during the day- but toutch wood we are in a nice area and not many folk would chance breaking into a bulldogs house...! :p
