Garlic as a fly repellant

I know I could buy a tub of garlic to add to his feed, but could I feed 'real' garlic? If so, how much, I'm thinking one clove a day?

If I feed real garlic should I crush it or just put a clove in his feed and see if he eats it?

We use powdered, as a) its cheaper, b) it is more difficult to leave and c) easier to deal with.
(Our retired mare will not eat garlic whatever we do, she must have read the poisons book!)

Just read a article in a horse mag that says it is proven to work on humans as fly repellant but not on horses although it has other proven properties.So do we buy garlic or not!!!!!!!!!

I used garlic as a repellant for a Shetland with Sweet Itch about 20 years ago, it worked very well

But last year I spoke to a lady about feeds (sorry, can't remember her name

) and she said it killed the good bacterior in the horses gut so it shouldn't be fed

i decided to try and feed fresh garlic. so far I've fed 1 clove/day sliced in feed- no idea if this is correct amount. it's not that messy if i just slice it into 4, she happily crunches up the rest. it's a lot cheaper than powder/granules (69p for 4 large bulbs which should last me over a month v. £8 (ish) for 1 months supply of powder) and more potent.

Here in Spain they put garlic cloves in oil and then put a bit of oil in the feed -great for the coat and helps with the flies .

Yes thats what I do, garlic in oil then its easy to add the oil to the feeds, even my fussy TB will eat it.
