Can some one please explain to me what a gas guzzler actually is?
Im not being thick or anything, but what do the goverment class as a gas guzzler?
I drive a 1.6 Litre Suzuki Grand Vitara (that tows very well I might add!) but surly that cant be in the same tax legue as a Disco (example)

I'm not sure but I think it will depend on the age of your vehicle - thats how they worked it last year.

If you visit the DVLA website it will tell you what band your car will fit into at the current rates.

If you can make head or tail of it, this site is supposed to tell you what band your car is in......it isn't as straightforward as you might think though

i think it is to do with the co2 emissions. when you go to tax a vehicle the less co2 emissions it has the less it costs. for instance my sons 1.2 renault clio is only £79.75 for 6 months but my dads 2.4 jaguar is £105.75 for 6 months. its all to do with being enviromentally friendly

Mine doesnt exist according to the database

Maybe an Isuzu Trooper is tax free (ha ha - bet its in the top band.....)

lol yea I'm up for that one!

If its any help my trooper 3.1td 1993 has just been taxed and it was £175 for the year. Now I've searched the DVLA website and it does not fit into any of their bandings as it was pre March 2001.

Hope it doesn't go up much more, its getting ridiculous! Surely the amount you have to pay in petrol to run a gas guzzling car is tax enough!?

I can sort of understand the displeasure over people owning large 4x4's just to take the children to school in the middle of London etc.

However, it seems so unfair that if I buy a new 4x4 for use on the farm (towing cow trailer, fencing trailer, horse box and the likes) that we'll be treated as someone wantonly pumping Co2 emissions into the atmosphere for the sake of owning a fashionable Chelsea Tractor - the type of toy 4x4 that would never cope with any serious off road work.

I'd like to see anyone from the Government come and live and work on the farm, including towing a cow trailer with three heifers in it using a 1.0 3 cylinder putt-putt.

Yes we drive a large vehicle, but not as a fashion statement. It's a work tool. It's also a necessity come harsh weather to get around on quiet snow bound lanes.

I just taxed my car over here and it cost me 217 euro for six months and its only a 1.6 petrol vectra!!!! My clapped out old maverick will be 554 euro for six months!

you have it easy!!!!

We have a clapped out Maverick LWB and a Terrano SWB. Both on a 95 plate. lol

We only do about 4,000 miles a year too so it's not like we trapse up and down the country in it. How many pounds sterling does that equate to?

sorry its actually more its 573 euro for six months is £390 and if you are prepared to get the annual rate it is a little cheaper its 1033 euro or about £700

Thats for a x reg SWB maverick!!!!

Patches,

Do you not get a tax allowance for such a vehicle if it is registered as a farm vehicle over there? I don't know because we didn't have a farm in the UK, but here, and I'm sure Tia is well up to date on all this, if you register a truck (gas guzzler....ours has a 5.4 engine, whatever that means) we have farm plates and can claim tax back on it.

I drive a 2.5 Td diesel shogun and its underpowered (well i think it is) so is that classed as a gas guzzler? It has a smaller engine that a lot of large 4x4's.
