Just went up the farm to feed tonight and Summers had been bleeding on inside leg... quite deap gash at the bottom... swollen slightly around and quite hot... not lame... if i got the vet out would their be anything they could do or should i just keep it clean and wait for it to heal!
Any advice would be really gratefull!!

The wound itself doesn't look particularly bad, I would flush it out well with saline and just check to make sure there is no debris in it.

If you call the vet the likely hood is that they will give the horse antibiotics and possibly bute.

The more wussy TB types will often blow up on that type of wound and end up needing antibio's, personally I'd leave it until the morning and reasses then, if it isn't massively swollen I'd not call vet and just keep clean, if it blows up then I'd get some antibiotics.

Yep I made sure nothing was in it and properly washed it all.. seems okay at the min its just what it turns out like tmro as u say... hope it is okay, have gave her bute tonight incase its hurting.

personally I would get the vet out in the morning as it is quite deep and fairly near the hock. probably over-reacting but better safe than sorry!

someone on our yard ended up with a £6000 vet bill

after a minor looking kick near the hock which they got the vet out to quickly but they were just really unlucky!

I tend to agree with the above. The gash in itself will most likely heal without complications, but there's always a risk of joint infection if you were really unlucky, being so near the joint. To be on the safe side I'd get the vet out.

I'd have had the vet out immediately for that. The cut is too near the hock for my liking. It may have penetrated the hock joint which would be a medical emergency. Have you seen any pale straw coloured liquid oozing from the cut?

cold hose for five mins clean throughly the pics would not come up for me if it is just a gaxe that has stopped bledding and is in a normal place it should be fine but if it is near or over a joint get the vet out coz joints can sone get infected!

Hope it is ok today - funny, your pics reminded me of a very similar injury that my mare did as a 3 year old - pics below, first is just done, the second is the next day. It did heal ok, but she did have antibiotics as you can see it did swell quite a bit and she was lame on it for a day or so. The other thing is that the little 'knobbly' bit of skin didn't heal as well and went proud, so had to be treated and she has been left with a small lumpy scar there which is a bit of a shame - something you may want to watch out for.

I would have had the vet out straight away. It is imperative to get the vet when there is a cut/gash/puncture wound near a joint otherwise the object that has caused the injure could have penetrated the joint and this can cause MASSIVE infection within hours. The wound needs to be flushed out and the vet will be able to examine the joint to ascertain if any synovial (joint) fluid has escaped. It is always better to be safe than sorry when faced with these type of injurys, I have had the vet out before now to a small puncture wound over a knee, as it happens the vet said it was fine, but having lost a horse with a completely opened fetlock joint that failed to heal I know to my cost how important this is (the horse was in hospital and had three ops to flush out the wound and reset the plaster cast he was in following his injury on a pleasure ride).

Yes marnie that is very similar I have no idea how shes done it! I was up at the farm at sunrise this morning because I was worried... totally no swelling and she seems fine in her self, maybe she has just got lucky.

applecart14 I really dont think it has gone that deep to hit anything other than flesh... i had a look right in and i think she has just scraped by and just been that close to seriously hurting her self... if any signs that she goes lame or anything I will be getting vet straight out but no swelling or anything so far so im pleased and hoping shes just going to have a lucky escape if I keep it clean and treated x Thanks all

The only thing I could think of with Mups was if she had caught it with her foot getting up - she was only a youngster and didn't have shoes on. Just one of those things I suppose!

Glad your girl is doing ok.

Id say see how it is tomorrow and get vet out if it seems no better. Dont take chances if your not entirely happy with it. We're possibly looking at bone damage now after what we thought was just a gash, dread to think what would've happened had we not had the vet out! Not saying yours will be as bad as that, but dont take the chance if its still swollen and hot! She may just need antibiotics
