Hello

I am beginning to think my mare may have gastric ulcers as I have been reading about it recently and it would explain a lot of her behaviour eg spookiness, threatening to bite or grind teeth when having her girth done up, occasional irrational aggression. Her back, saddle and teeth have all been checked recently with no problems.

So I am probably going to have her scoped but have been reading on here and other forums and wondered whether it would be worth trying something like coligone or similar for a while before I go to the expense of the veterinary treatment?

Will these relieve the symptoms or are they just simply a preventative?

If I can use them how long would I need to feed them before you would expect to see an improvement?

This is all new to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would most definitely use Coligone given the symptoms you have described, it really can be a miraculous turnround for some horses.

http://www.hbradshaws.co.uk/ this is the website and I recommend actually phoning and speaking to Katie (she developed the product) who will be able to give you much more information than I could.

That's great spaniel thank you for the advice I will give Katie a call on Monday. My mare is in season at the moment so is acting spookier and crazier than normal but even when not is season is still very spooky and also hates having her girth done up so it sounds like its worth a try.

Thanks again

We've been using it with an orphaned foal (we were recommended it on here) we are now on our 2nd batch and considering she took my groom and farrier through the garden fence last week, I can confirm that we saw a difference within 10 days. We've also changed the little mites diet so that she doesn't get too much acidity (so wet hay, wet food and moved away from cerals) as her probable ulcers were caused by stress and being orphaned.

I'm a sceptic, but have seen a change in her and its for the better, so much so that I'm frightened to take her off it!! We were on Gastroguard but it was expensive and our vet was reluctant to put her thru the stress of a scope and having lost her mum to colic anything that might prevent us another trip to the horse hospital was worth a try!!

Working on the basis that some of the newmarket studs use as a preventative when weaning and the fact we saw no real improvement when on gastroguard, but have on coligone, I suppose I'm a convert. H's Mum is the HHO online name to pm!
