I have had a mare diagnosed with Gastric Ulcers and the Vet prescribed GastroGuard. Needless to say after two weeks of treatment the mare has improved and i would say back to normal.

As we all know Gastroguard is expensive. I would be interested to know how to prevent the ulcers from re-occuring and are their any supplements out there that helps with a build up of stomach acid and actually works!!!

Remove all cereals from the diet. Only feed fibre. Alfalfa is good beause it is high in calcium, which buffers acid. Never be more than 2 hours without food so the acid has something to digest, instead of the stomach lining. My friend uses a herbal supplement called cribease and thinks its great. Here is some more info from that product:

Mine had a two week course of Gastrogard to blitz them then my vets recommended Equine America U-Gard Plus - seems to be doing the job (off for a 12 week re-scan next week so fingers crossed!)

Vet prescribed Gastroguard for a friends horse (so bad with ulcers we did consider pts as she was dangerous).

The horse wasnt insured so she put her straight onto Coligone. Within two days the mare was like a different animal. Well worth using after the prescribed stuff.

Diet is the most important part for controling ulcers. The horse should be fed ad lib firbe, and no ceral base feeds, as well as regular turn out

Am well aware of that but once the ulcer has formed it is necessary to prescribe more than just a fibre diet to relieve the condition.
