Hi guys.
I've been part-loaning a horse in the North-East since September. I am buying him & moving him to a professional yard in the Lake District in about 3 weeks time.

I have always suspected that he may have gastric ulcers & finally I will have the authority to do something about it (as his current owner is very strict). He is generally very grumpy and has a major attitude problem. He dislikes having his girth done up, rug put on/taken off & grooming around his belly. In the past couple of months he seems to have lost a fair bit of condition even though he has been ridden more and is getting fitter week by week. He also constantly keeps scratching his belly with his teeth or just turns and looks at his belly. When being ridden, he takes a severe dislike to any leg aids and tries to bite my leg when given any. He is also very hard to keep in a trot and constantly has his ears flat back, often kicking out also. He has a small haynet overnight and one during the day (which is nowhere near enough in my opinion), he has access to turnout depending on the weather (and depending on whether the staff actually fill his nets/turn him out). I can't wait to get him into a proper routine somewhere that I can care for him 24/7.

After reading many articles on gastric ulcers, I feel certain this is what he has. Does anybody else have or have experienced having a horse with gastric ulcers? I have looked at putting him onto NAF GastriAid supplement & seeing if that makes a difference.

Thankyou for your help!

On Youtube there is a video ULCER DIAGNOSIS BY MARK DE PAOLO ,very interesting it shows what you have just described,I hope this helps . I have not had a horse with ulcers but reading this forum it seems a good treatment is Gastro plus ,so maybe research that . Wishing you all the best with him ,you sound very caring.

have just watched the video, brilliant diagnosis and will definitely try it out tomorrow on him. thanks for recommending shergar :)

There is some great advice on here already if you search other threads. I suspect that my horse has mild ulcers, and someone had suggested a handful of Alfa-A Oil before riding - tried it yesterday and it worked well!

Mine had ulcers and was treated with Gastro Guard, expensive but works. I ensure he has ad lib hay and give him hay or lucie pellets before I ride (simple system lucie pellets (alfa)), ensure the diet is low in starch and sugars, I use top spec balancer and alfa a molasses free. My vet suggested any signs then use Rantidine, if you can get hold of that try it first. x

I thought you would like that video, hope your move goes well, come back and let us know how you are getting on when you are settled.

My lad has always had a bit of a runny tummy and also a bit touchy with his tum. I was talking to a friend and she suggested using Gastro-Kalm. Along with probiotics it has worked well. He is so much happier.

I will try the Alfa Oil before I ride him ,although he is out 24/7 and always has a hay net in his stable.
