Hi i was just wondering if there are any readers with ulcer knowledge. My 16.2 holstein x tb showjumper was scoped 3 weeks ago and it showed he had grade 2 -4 stomach ulcers near outflow and inflow areas he also had inflamation and swelling in his stomach. He has been on gastrgard for 3 weeks now and there is a big improvement hes alot happier even to be groomed and loads better being ridden almost back to his self his appitite is great. He is still funny in canter sometimes so what i have been doing is just doing a few strides of good canter and just doing more walk and trott and leaving it at that as i didnt want him to get grumpy and funny. I dont know if it is still causing him trouble or if he is thinking that its going to hurt him. Hes on one tube of gastro a day and i have changed him to a high fibre diet low cal chaff, high fibre cubes, blus mash, i also give him brewers yeast and corn oil, and i give him a small chaff feed 30 mins before i ride. Hes turned out on a night and in in the day and he has lots and lots of hay so ii know he wont run out. Im thinking he will most probably need alot more treatment on the gasto and i am just being patient and building things up slowly. My friend had a horse who was on gastro for 4 months, so i am prepared that it could take a while. I was just wondering if any other readers could share there experiences and knowledge of ulcers with me. I just thinking the canter is going to be the last one to resolve . Many thanks

have heard coligone is very good for ulcers. Im not an expert on ulcers but thats a wide margin for severity. i cant remember which way round they do it but i thought grade 4 was severe. so im confused as how it can be 2-4 as two would still be bad but not as sever as four..
if that makes any sense what so ever!

Hi china i ave heard coligone im wondering if i can feed that same time as him being on the gastro. He had quite a few ulcers some were grade 2/3 some were grade 4 they varied. Just cant wait for him to be totally better and back to his old self he was in so much pain with it, we had everything checked for vets didnt even mention ulcers it was my friends as they said they experienced the same thing so i asked to have him scoped and my friends were right. I think my vets didnt think of it because if you look at him he is well upto weight with a fab shiny coat my friends said hers was the same to, but least we konw what it is now. its just really annoying as i jump bsja so missing so many shows, but his health is more imptant and id rather get him better first!

The horse with ulcers on my yard needed 3 months gastroguard and is now on a preventative supplement. Can't remember the name right now as it's in my feed room and I'll have it check tomorrow. It's expensive though (around £140 per month) but works really well. The only symptoms this horse had was a reluctance to go forward at any gait and looking at her sides as though she had colic. I still don't think she is 100% comfortable but the last scope was clear. If possible, have your horse out 24/7 as this really helps. Three weeks is no time at all and I would not expect real improvements for a few weeks yet. The horse ay my yard found trot the most uncomfortable pace when she had the ulcers. Canter was easier for her, surprisingly. She also hated the feel of the rider's leg going on. That has improved greatly after treatment.

thanx wagtail that would be great if you could let me know what its called :)my horse started to get funny in april didnt want to go forward atall he just got so grumpy canter was worse i think thats when acid splashes aaound most and he would just be so so grumpy didnt want to go forward shove his head in the air pin his ears back, he was also funny to girth up and has always been grumpy grooming and this has gone now, hes back to his normal self in walk and trott and is better in canter but not perfect like he was before it all started, i just have to be patient. I cant turn him out 24/7 as its to hot in the day and he doesnt like it and all horses at the yard come induring the day. but i put him out at around 6ishpm and he comes in in the morning at around 9 so hes out there for quite along time luckily. he has a feed then and another one at lunch time with another supplement the vet gave me started with a p but cant rememeber what its called but it has to be given to them 6 hours before being ridden. then he has his gastro gard i then ride then hour later he has his tea and then turned out

Sorry I missed this post. The supplement is called Equitop Pronutrin. There are no instructions that it has to be given 6 hours before exercise as far as I can see but I better have another read. I just feed her once in the morning at the moment and she is exerceised any time between 10 am and 4 pm. I will PM you with this too in case you miss my reply.
