what is the best supplement for a horse with ulcers? also would it do any harm if the horse is only suspected as having ulcers but not yet been scoped?

the back person suggested that my horse may have ulcers and to try him on some kind of supplement to help him out and if there's a change then go for the scoping etc. i'd have to wait until the new year for a vet to scope him (my usual vet is away and don't trust the others unless an emergency).

You could try coligone.

Gastroguard is also rinitidrine (sp) which is a human drug about 10% of the price. Personally I found neither to be effective. Only long term solution for both my ulcery mares has been 24/7 turn out.

Incidentally I never scoped mine but the symptoms are pretty clear IMO, colic like attacks, gastric discomfort, constantly casting......

I use Equine America Ulser Gard. I have found it brilliant on a horse which I bought in August. When he came he was nappy, moody, stressed, wouldn't eat and generally a miserable git. Since being on the powder he has turned inside out, loves his work and is a much happier individual. There's no harm in giving it a try.

Gastrogard is very expensive a month at treatment dose will cost you about £800 and if your horse has ulcers then they need to be treated first. Gastrogard is actually the human drug Omeprazole. The reason they say that you can't use straight omeprazole is that it needs to be in some sort of enteric protective carrier otherwise the drug is destroyed before it can do any good.

The only way to tell if your horse has ulcers is by scoping. This costs about £200.

This webpage has some good sensible information about gastric ulcers, treatment and management.

thanks for the replies. i will be speaking to my vet about getting him scoped in the new year but thought i'd try a supplement in the meantime to see if it made any difference.

he's become a bit moodier in general, has had a couple of mild bouts of colic (in 9 months), has become a bit girthy but does enjoy his work once on him. i'm sure there are other things that have made me think of ulcers but can't remember them now.
