I did my first CIC** at Gatcombe. I naively thought it wouldn’t be too different from the Intermediate course – whoops!!

I did dressage early yesterday feeling a right twat in top hat and tails. Sarnita did quite a good test for her level of education but still struggled with the lateral movements. It was weird we had two judges and one marked us 26 marks higher than the other one. We got a score of 64.4 which was in the main pack the judges seemed to mark quite harshly. Zara Phillips did the best test on 38.

I then walked th XC and decided that the dressage was irrelevant and perhaps the wisest course of action would be to go home. There were two huge brush corners with a tight 180 degree turn between them, a bounce into water, a jump off a drop which on the landing side was well above my head to some angled rails and a really trickly line of brush roll top – hedge to brush roll top 2 strides between each. I didn’t sleep a lot last night!

The SJ was big as well but is our forte and she jumped a cracking clear only about a third of the class were clear. XC went really well we had a dodgy moment at the tricky line where madam was concentrating more on all the people looking at her rather than the fence – about 2 strides out she realised she was meant to be jumping and wobbled through the first 2 elements luckily the 3rd part was separately numbered so we circled before jumping it. She did the rest really well she went a bit green on me in the middle and jumping into the water but finished really well. I didn’t push for time at all so got 26 time faults which put us out of contention.

I think we finished about 40th in a class of over a 100 so really chuffed particularly as course caused loads of problems even WFP had a ducking in the water.

What a fantastic result you must be really pleased - 1* will look small after doing that! What a fantastic mare you have - advanced next season?

Well done! That sounds very good, very promising. Out of interest do you know if it was the judge not at C who gave you the lower marks? It can happen that way sometimes, particularly with the lateral movements. Were you after a qualification there? Or is that it for the season?

Yes it was the judge at C that gave a lot lower marks but it seemed to be for all movements not just the lateral ones. A friend had very similiar sheets from the two judges so who knows.

Yes I was after the qualification but for next season really as It now means I am qualified fir a CCI** and advanced so it opens a few options.

I don't want to push things too quickly it may be different if she had a jockey that had done it all before and gone up the levels but I'm new to it as well. The 1* at Weston should give her a real cofidence boosting run to finish the season.
