On Tuesday I am on gate shutting duty. Apart from a knife and lots of baling twine what else do I need?
And do I stay at the back unless I get a shout to come up to open a gate?
I am on my mare who is very good at gates and I can jump on and off easily.

Yes, you should be sweeper upper so not up the front, leave others to open gates, there should be someone riding up with the huntsman and whip especially to be their little helper - otherwise you'll only have to wait around for them to come through.

Remember to note any fences that get broken and inform the appropriate person at the end of the day, that is most important even if you think you have repaired it with your baler twine; they need to know as that is the way to get hounds stopped from going over land, not repairing their damage and leaving the farmer to find out himself; not a good idea! If they don't know about it, how can they repair it? Many people 'forget' to report their own damage or don't even realise they've done it which is a bit hard to understand when they've taken posts out at the roots! It's a bugbear of mine as OH does hunt repairs and many a time the farmer will tell him of extra damage that nobody knows about, not good! It doesn't cost the people who did the damage so why can't they own up, grrh?!

Don't forget the Mars bars and a phone and hope you have a good day; let us know how you get on.
