Took my mare hunting yesterday on gate shutting duty. Parked away from the meet as I wanted to hack her there and a girl hacked down with me as she didn't know where to go. She stood perfectly at the meet but was like a tank when we set off. I was told to stay near the back which I think is why she was so strong. For the first couple hours she was just tanking everywhere, head between her knees. Fortunately I didn't have any gates to do.
I decided not to jump to start with as she would just tank me into the bottom of them. But when I found a nice jump, one of the mounted landowners was on a non jumper and had no one to go round with so I went with her, which did mean I was away from the field, but luckily there was no gates to do.
In the end I only had 2 gates to close, mostly because the quads were behind and were closing them. I tried to give them a tenner as we had joked about it earlier but they wouldn't have it.
So bit change needed, I'm going to try a waterford cheltenham gag as she can only go in waterfords or straight bars. Yesterday she was in a straight bar pelham with 2 reins.

Sounds like you ahd a great days "gate shutting"! Sounds like yuo had the perfect day bar your breaks!

Like you said could just be because of being at back?

I hunt one in waterford cheltenham & find it wonderful! He knows I have it & so can just ride him on the snaffle but have the other should I need it!

Thanks all. The saying 'jammy s*d' was going around alot yesterday. I did offer to pay but they wouldn't have it!

oofadoofa- My arms and shoulders are killing me. I very nearly ran over a quad through lack of breaks, luckily she can turn PDQ, they were laughing about it though. I was out with the Avon Vale.
