Does anyone know if I need planning permission to put a gate on my field? Currently I go through another field to get my horses out of the field. The field does have road frontage and a dropped curb where there was a gate but is no post and rail and has been for several years. I would like to put a gate in but don't want to upset the council!

i would say if the gatepost is still there, (even if it has to be replaced) then you should be fine but make sure you take photos of the old gateposts. Recommend going for wood as less likely to be nicked for scrap if its at the road access point!

If not, it would be worth checking with the council perhaps.

If they are funny about a full size gate (as they think vehicles will use it and therefore go on about visibility splays onto the road, and you werent able to meet the specification for some reason, they would probably be happy with a bridleway size gate (say 5 foot); if of course that was enough for your needs.
