I thought i would just let everyone know how fantastic these hats are.

My horse bucked me off and caught me in the head twice with the back feet (he was bucking in a circle & lashing out). I can honestly say if i had not been wearing the H.S.1 i would be in a bad state. The outer shell of the hat ended up cracking where his hoof hit and has a slight hoof (toe) shaped hole in it that you can press down (the inside is still in tact though) but other than concussion my head is ok.

I therefore can not recommend them enough. When i looked on the website to check the spec on the hat it says that theyre the only one tested for a secondary kick - thankgod for that is all i say!!

I am now off riding for 6 weeks and will be replacing my H.S.1 before i get back in the saddle. I have an older riding hat that i would normally use for hacking *thankgod i didnt that day* - that is now in the bin also and will be replaced by an H.S.1 aswell.

I would post a pic of the hat but ive lost the digicam lead. When i find it I will add a pic.

Thanks for reading,
Sam

Oh my word, what a horrible accident!

Glad you are OK(ish) and what a great review of the HS1. Have you thought about contacting them with a report of what happened and some pictures as well?

gosh - glad you are ok - great news about the hat

i did try to get one cos of their great reviews - but i have totally the wrong shaped head for them :( they hurt at front or were too loose at sides if they were ok at front :( i have a peaked cap shape head - not a JS shaped one :(

Dunlin - Ive sent a mesage to Gatehouse to ask if they want the hat back for research purposes or whatever, im waiting for a reply :)

Im now rearranging my horsey calendar to start later in the year as i had just started the horses fittening work... bummer...

Have to say though, i really feel for the riders who break their backs/pelvises. I was taped down to a spinal board with blocks either side of my head for about 12 hours as they thought id fractured c3 or c4. No fracture thankgod just dizzyness but it was awful!! I felt more nausia due to being laid flat on my back then from the accident itself.

Posie-Honey - i have a bit of an odd shaped head also (not due to the kick hehe), in my old charles owen hat i had to put the 'sticky pad' things on the inside where my temples are to make it fit properly. It never moved after that.

so glad you are ok, that sounds scary! i had one and had to give up on it as it just didt fit me, same as posie_honey :( i have a ventair skull now and it fits really well :) i used to have a couple of different hats, one for 'best' etc- now i always wear my skullhat as you never know when accidents could happen and i think you should have the best protection at all times.

Sounds like a horrific fall! So so glad you're okay!
My horse is only a baby, so I'm sticking to my velvet 'Fiona's Hat' (Charles Owen) until I take him XC till the end of this year, where I'll be purchasing a HS1. Went to buy one this Xmas, but thought I'd spend the money on some Jeffries reins instead as I wouldn't be wearing the hat, and my horrid cheapy reins were cutting up my fingers
