The police log of the incident is below. If you have any information please contact the police officer who's details are at the bottom of the log report.

ROAD TRAFFIC COLLISION - OPERATIONS SUPPORT DIVISION (XA) - LOG 0117 /
20.09.09
At 0052 hours on Sunday 20th September 2009, the first of numerous
reports were received of a multi - vehicle Road Traffic Collision, on the
A1 south, three miles south of Ferrybridge Services. Resources from the
Motorway unit attended the scene, and a full closure of the A1 southbound
carriageway was implemented at Darrington. It was established that three
horses had been struck and killed on a blind corner of the A1. A fourth
horse was located in a nearby field, badly injured and was put down by a
local vet. Five vehicles were involved in the incident, and nine people
received minor injuries. Enquiries established an Equestrian Centre
situated within North Yorkshire's area and about one mile from the RTC
had been broken into, resulting in the horses being in the carriageway.
The road remained closed for a number of hours pending recovery of the
horses and damaged vehicles. Investigations into the incident are ongoing
by the Motorway Unit. North Yorkshire police are conducting enquiries
into the break in at the Equestrian centre.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The motorway incident was in West Yorkshires force area but the attempt
break in occurred just out of our borders and was in North Yorkshire Police
force area, so I only have limited information.

10 horses missing/stolen from local Equestrian Centre. Secure gates to the
yard had been removed using oxyacetylene / welding type device.

4 of the horses were killed as a result. It is not known if the horses were
stolen and the thieves changes their mind/encountered problems? Or if the
attempt theft went wrong and the horses broke lose? Or if the horses were
let out in an attempt to take equipment?

Either way, this is a despicable and very very sad chain of events leading
to the sad loss of 4 horses. I have no information of the
welfare/whereabouts of the other horses at this stage.

These people are going to rural areas fully equipped and intent on causing
chaos to make a few quid.

PLEASE be vigilant. Protect your horses. Think about security. Security
mark animals and tack. Keep a note of people and/or vehicles acting
suspiciously in the area. Don't make it easy for them.

So sad

I cant read it, to sad! Firstly why would you steal the gates and secondly why do it to allow animals onto a main road!
Pikies! Some people need a beating ! I know vilence isnt the answer but sometimes a good slap it what ppl need

Light iron is down in price but still £75/tonne round here; I recently got £36 for a flat bed trailer of scrap metal which was mainly wire with some tin and old gate things. I think 'certain types' do drive round 'acquiring' anything metal. Re; the insurance, is it true that if one doesn't have specialist horse cover, one's house insurance often covers accidents? Just wondered, I am covered by the BHS anyway..

dreadfull, some idiots un hinged the yard gate at my last yard and pushed it down a hill. Fortunatly the only loose animals on the yard were a cow and her surrogate calves and they stayed by their haybale! Cant get over the sheer vicious careless attitude that has lead to loss of the poor horses and such terrible trauma to the car drivers involved.

Thats true, I work in shipping and we do ship out an awfull lot of scrap metal there is alot of money in it but 2 gates? hardly seems worth it

It says 10 horses were also stolen.

I thought the other horses had been rounded up and returned to the yard?

This is not far from me, it'd just awful. I feel so sorry for the yard, we bought a horse from there many years ago and they had a lot of horses and animals used for film work and battle rein-actments. Not sure if it's the same people still there now or not but just how dreadful.

I also feel sick for the poor people who had the shock of encountering the horses on the road. That part of the A1 is pretty windy, you wouldn't have had much chance to stop at all.

Shocking. Seems some people will steal anything that isnt bolted down sometimes, not too long ago people here were stealing manhole covers from the middle of the road

Hardly seems worth putting other people in danger
