has anyone successfully managed to use a gazebo for shade in their paddocks with out any tragic horses tanglements or it being completely trashed?

Keen for some extra shade for my guys but YO wont be happy with a permanent fixture..

Thanks :)

We use gazebos for them camping :) Wouldn't leave them totally free with the 'normal' standard gazebos though- the legs break so easily and are sharp- would hate for a horse to rub on the leg, break it and it collapse on their head! Could you stick some tarp up vertically from the direction the sun shines?

I'm sorry but a properly built shelter is all that should be considered where horses are concerned.... lots of shelters are built to be able to be moved. On skids perhaps or can be screwed together and apart with temporary (unconcreted) posts.

If you are worried about the hot sun, bring them in during the day and turn out at night. Personally, I wouldn't compromise on shelter. Good luck talking your YO on a sensible solution!

that's true.. silly me.. are there horse safe alternatives?! If I had something to attach the tarp to that could work.. but needs to be potable!

We bought a couple of massive patio umbrellas (off ebay) and stuck them them outside the field secured to the uprights of fences whilst waiting for planning permission on a building. I think with a couple you could guarantee some shade.
Ours roundly ignored them but yours might be more grateful.
