does anyone know if you have to jump for the video assessment? My daughter is about to start her filming, our pony can't jump at present and her teacher says this is ok. I'm sure jumping it is a criteria of the assessment? We are also having issues with the course work, any pointers on what you wrote about would be helpful. The PE teacher knows nothing about riding and Is very unhelpful. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Do you know which exam board it is? The specification will be available to download and you'll see what's required for the ridden assessment.

My friend did it for AQA last year, not 100% sure but fairly sure she did have to jump a course of jumps, I think there was a certain number you had to do but height didn't matter. It will def be on the website though

On a quick google it looks like the exam specs changed in 2016 so be careful of relying on the experience of others who took the exam before then. There are three forms of the AQA PE GCSE - short form, long form and double award. You need to know the course code. You can view the checklists to confirm that the requirements are complete from this link http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/phys...controlled-assessment/role-and-activity-check

My daughter did this but long time ago now! Look at the exam spec but also its worth finding out who will be looking at the video and what their experience is! i.e. is it a friend of the teacher? I expected my daughter to get top marks in the video part but she didn't and although I didn't enquire I did wonder if this was because she was riding a hairy M & M rather than a plaited horse - the others were more into eventing!!!

My daughter did 2 years ago.

She just did the riding part, not the leadership bit.

she definitely had to jump and think it was 2'9ish. Was bit of mockery really as PE teachers didn't have a clue and all we needed was a letter from her RI to say she could do all the items on the list

Hello,

Boy am I glad to find this thread!

A girl who has one of my ponies on load is doing her GCSE PE and has been told that she needs to jump a 90cm/1m course in a competition environment and have her video in before the end of September!

They're both more than capable of jumping the course size, however, the rider is only just started to compete (rode in riding school before getting my pony on loan) has been to two competition where she's completed 2 85cm courses and a 90cm course done lovely with a couple of blips (ring experience is all that's needed)

Now the issue we have is that my tow car broke which means we can't actually get out competing now till I sort another car out unless we hire (costs a fortune!) and get lifts... which a few and far between.

I can't believe they expect this much from GSCE PE students... I always thought it was just walk, trot, canter, no stirrups, and jumps a course or show jumps.

I had no idea it had to be done in a competition environment.... in which case we might have to 'make the scene up' using our own facilities!

Any help would be hugely helpful :) Thanks in advance!

It's all a little daft how they work out these things for GCSE PE. My friend only got 9/10 for badminton...she played internationally! Do you only get a 10 if you actually make the olympics as a 16 yo??

I had the teacher come out to see me (nice afternoon out of school) saw me on board for less than 10 minutes before she announced I knew what I was doing...then did the leadership part and gave my friend a lesson. Jumping wasn't required as we could ride to a certain level of dressage but could be different for exam boards.

This might be useful, no where does it specify the level of competition needed. If you can't go somewhere maybe an online dressage test? Or just get an instructor to make a test sheet up!

I helped one girl with her video and it was all done at home, I am not sure what mark she got but she certainly passed and the video was fine, they do have some ridiculous ideas from what I can remember but they are guidelines not set in stone, some kids don't jump so can show more dressage, from memory we did all the basic flatwork with a few bits such as rein back and walk to canter because the pony was good at that, then videoed several jumping sessions to include some gridwork and related fences which was then edited to show the "best bits", read biggest jumps!

The teachers supervising often have no riding experience so take the guidelines too literally and most would have no idea what to look for anyway so do what you can, show the best parts and she should be fine.

Thank you both! Yes I've watched a few GCSE vids and I think she'll be fine :) We're going to film some this weekend :D x
Just be careful as this year is the first year through of the new specification and it is all different in that there has to be an assessment of both skills in isolation (marked out of 10) and competitive performance (marked out of 25) The videos on YouTube are therefore not going to be appropriate. It might be a good idea to look up the specification to make sure you cover all that is necessary. The height of fence attempted does affect the mark given. Some PE teachers do have a clue😉. Good luck.

I was quite shocked at the syllabus for horse riding as it was obviously going to be one of the 4 sports I chose to have graded. To get the top marks you had to ride in a double bridle and it also involved jumping an I think 3 foot course . I'm not sure if it was either the double or the course or if you had to do both. Fortunately old yo had a schoolmaster who had a double bridle so I had some lessons on him and actually quite liked the feeling of it.

Definitely don't think I had to do it in a competition environment and would have really struggled as I didn't have my own horse so was using the rs ones and they didn't have transport. People have done it at the yard since and I think they were just filmed during a private lesson doing the necessary stuff.

In the end I didn't end up doing it as I was so rubbish at everything else some of us got to do the theory only btec as at the time I was struggling to think what else I'd put with the riding and PE was compulsory at my school.

This was 11 years ago though so they may have made it easier now. Though reading the latest one it looks even harder now! I wouldn't have been able to do the competitive part apart from in one of the rs's competitions so it seems quite exclusive.

Just saw this thread in passing.

Gosh don't the youngsters of today have a fab time?? OMFG, what we oldies would have given to have been able to do Exams in Horse Riding in our youth! We'd have swooned over our Pony Club Manuals of Horsemanship and Pullein-Thompson pony books.

What I wouldn't give to be a teenager again......... you lucky lucky young people is all I can say.

Thanks :D Yeah I checked out some that were from 2016/2017 just for formatting help really and how they've gone about it. They all show competitive performance too so hopefully it might help us out a little bit :)

Thanks again xxx
