ryt so my horse is a welsh d very round in the back and her saddle slips slightly (i am heavier in one leg) so i bought her a new numnah that had soft gel under and on top. Ive gave her a full clip except face and legs and rode her in the new cloth last night its great saddle dosent move but when we were nearly done she started twitching and i knew something was uncomfortabkle so i got off and took the saddle off, the left hand side of her back under saddle was fine but the other side the tiny hairs were standing up in places to im assuming the saddle moved slight;y and caught the hair now this has got to be uncomfortable for her sooo my question is what is peoples experiences of using a gel pad on a fully clipped horse?? xxxxxxx

The pad is doing what's supposed to do but eliminating the fricton would be the next step. Does the saddle fit ? Or could your horse loose weight as this would help.
If you are riding heavier on one side, this is the most important thing to change. A session with a sports physio or McTimoney could help you, or doing Pilates to increase your core strength and balance.
Also, look at your horse from behind to check that she's level and not more muscled on one side or the pelvis is straight as this can make you ride one sided too.

she does have one shoulder larger than the other, its a new wow saddle ive got so still getting used to it. but saddle fitter changed the air in the bags to combat the action from the larger shoulde throwing the saddle over. i know i need to get my balance sorted :d shes not been ridden in a few weeks and is overweight but i have her bk in work so we shal get our bums in gear :D is do you think it would help if when her hair grows bk in and i need to clip again to leave a saddle patch ?? or what else is there i could try in the meantime?? thank you for replying

sorry if this does not make any sense but would you be able to put the gel between the saddle and numnah/saddlecloth? so that the gel is still doing its job but is not in direct contact against your horses back? when I had a gel pad for my TB I put it between the saddle and numnah and didnt have any probs when he was fully clipped.
hope that helps x

Don't think leaving a saddle patch will help other than to give the gel pad something to pull. You'll still find the hair is roughed up under neath.
Getting your horse fit and working on your balance are the two most effective things you can do, although I appreciate its not going to help with the immediate problem.
What sort of girth do you use ? Use one that is non elastic or elastic at both ends. The Stubben string girth works well on my roundy native.
If your horse seems uncomfortable go back to the saddler to check the fit again. A point and balance strap may help as a short term solution, or girthing on the 1st and 3rd straps if you do not do this already.
When you are riding, get someone to video you or if hacking, ask them to point out if you are not sitting straight as being aware of the issue can help change bad habits too.
Asking your saddler or Mc Timoney practitioner for advice would be the best way though as they are there to assess you and your horse.

@ all about romeo- yeah that would be a gd idea althought he gel is lned in the numah xx

@ horse rider- yeah i totally agree that i need to fix myself ive not had a lesson in a year hard to find the kind of instructor i want and then theres if they will come out, also its a dressage girth solid on both ends. because i have a wow saddle they only have 2 straps although i could speak to my saddle fitter and see if they can be ajusted on the saddle.

I just dont want her to be uncomfortable. Than yous
