I'm not a youngster (66!) but don't want to give up my horse yet. If I ride for more than 45 minutes now I suffer from awful back pain and its really affecting my enjoyment of the ride and usually I can't wait to get home. I have been thinking of getting a gel seat saver and have seen advertised a LeMieux Pro Gel Seat Saver which claims to relieve lower back pain. Also Acavallo Gel In Seat Cover which claims to reduce concussion and jarring in the lower back. They are quite expensive but if they work I would get one. Has anyone had experience of these products or any ideas that would help me. (I have tried a physiotherapist but didn't really make any difference :( ) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I ride in a heather moffett saddle and it's amazing, keeps me in correct position and has helped my back no end, not cheap but can't recommend it enough! You can also get a 'seatsaver' that she does that is lovely too and a much more affordable offer, usually lots on eBay or check out her website, 'enlightened equitation'. If you google her you will find lots about her and her products!

Mmmm...... whilst I can see that some products might seem attractive, and are probably very good indeed, I wonder whether your pain problem might need addressing at source??

By that I mean it might not be a bad idea to book yourself in with a chiropractor/osteopath, and let them look at why and how you're getting pain; rather than just thinking in terms of gel pads etc.

While you're at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea too to get a back person to look at your horse as well, as pain in the rider can mean there may be an uneven posture which can then cause problems for the horse too if not addressed. The lady I have does both horse AND rider, which is a huge help.

But would suggest you get professional help for your back pain in the first instance (and horse), and see if this helps (it should!).

Sorry meant to say also that it might be worth looking at your saddle as well: I had awful lower back pain in the saddle I used to ride in - but as soon as I changed the saddle I didn't get it anymore, plus my horse obviously felt the difference as I realised as soon as I'd changed the saddle that he had a lovely elevated trot which I never thought he'd got!!! So I'd be inclined to get a qualified saddle fitter out as well as your saddle could well be uneven and this may be causing you problems (plus your horse too).
