Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone know rough up to date prices for gelding a stallion.

He is about 4years old I think and has 2 where they should be.

Is it ok to be done in field or does he need a stable?

Is now a bad time of year to get it done?

Thanks all :)

I suspect your vets may want a four year old into the clinic to be gelded. I do mine at 6 - 9 months old, they are done at home in early part of year and it usually costs me around £100 if I catch the Special Offer time of year! I think yours will be considerably more!

you are best to phone local vets, prices really vary depending on what area you are in.

my vet will castrate any age with 2 dropped testicles on the lorry, he will also do them at home, he says if you can get a head collar on it he can castrate it as he can give the sedation. he is cheap too prices start at £120 depending on size age and sedation needed + travel if he comes to you. As for field or stable and time of year ideally they need dry turnout in a smallish paddock when there flies are not about, movement helps drain fluid after castration but muddy fields are not ideal.

My 4yo was done standing in the stable but was subject to a prelim exam to make sure a clinic trip wasn't necessary! £300 all in.

mine was done in the field, after a prelim exam, he only had one where it was meant to be, but the vet thought he could reach the other (which he did) cost around £300 including prelim exam and antibiotics after

It IS enormously variable - between vets to start with, then size (amount of drugs needed.) My weanling colts are about £140 each (excluding visit fee), and we did a 7 year old stallion a couple of months ago - closer to £250 because of more drugs needed, and a slightly slower procedure. All done in the field, with a GA.
