Gelding bits

for a few days now i have noticed that Linx keeps kicking up at his sheath area, at first i thought it was just an attention seeking thing but today i put a few things together - he has dryed stuff on his fetlock joints, i think its from where he's kicking up

anyway, he got 'it' out while i was there & it had quite a few pink areas on it (other areas black) could he have a problem

any advice, information welcome

P.S i dont ever clean his bits as I've always been told not to
 
Well willies are often multicoloured.....is this his usual colouring on his willie or is it usually all black?

Could he be being bitten by bugs? Which may be the fluid on his fetlocks? Could it be dried blood?
 
My gelding does this and it's because he gets bitten by flies. I can usually find spots of blood on his white socks when he's been bitten too.

I give it a good wash with warm water (just around the outside and just inside), dry off with a clean towel and then if he's been bitten I usually put Protocon cream on as that has fly repellent. Make sure you spray fly repellent on every day, or ask your YO to do it if you can't get down. This usually sorts my boy out and stops the flies.

well the pink bits look a bit raw, the dried fluid could be blood am gonna have a better look 2moz
 
prob flies bitting him, they bite H, H also gets dry Willy, hibi scrubb the sheath area and it will soon be good. Noticed that when H pushes Will through when sheath cleaned it is lovely and clean.
 
Could be he is doing what Chancer does, lies down in the field, puts his hind leg under him and rubs his todger on it - hence the dried gunk on the legs. Chancer gets sweet itch on his belly and sheath.

I feed him brewers yeast, linseed and use sudocream on the outside and entrance to the sheath every day. I also spay my fly spray with a lot of avon skin so soft on his belly and the sides of the sheath to help with the midges.

I would suggest rinsing out the sheath with warm water or if he is ok round there, sticking the hose up his bits to flush out anything. Put your hand up there and gently rub then flush until your hand comes out clean - not the most lovely job and make sure your horse is ok with you doing this. Mine really enjoy having this done.

If he is really stinky and black gunge - then a very small amount of sheath cleaner and rub round the inside of the sheath but don't go to far up and then really rinse well. I only use cleaner once or twice a year and just water the rest.

My geldings both have multi-coloured willy and like to dangle it whilst I gently rub any bits off - my OH calls me the horse w*anker.

Chancer needs a flush every couple of weeks and Cairo once a month in the warm weather but are normally ok in winter. Some horses do have more grubby bits than others.
 
i'd say the best thing is to give it a good clean with warm water and a sponge to start with and see if that makes any difference.
 
My boy kicks his belly with his back legs (usually only when he is hot from riding etc) and rubs his bits bakc and forth on his legs when he rolls (looks rather rude!!), but thats how he gets the gunk on his back legs....

He had a "bean" removed form his w1lly by the vet a while ago and the kicking got much better after that, but he still needs at least monthly washes down there (with mild sheath cleanser) cos the scank builds up on his willy and in his sheath and dries like little bits of gravel!! So its not surprising its itchy!!! I also give it a squirt with baby oil to loosen any dirt and sooth any itches

I was a bit worried it was blood, but its just dried wee and sweat etc..... it STINKS! I always spray fly repellent around the area too incase they are attracted by the vile smell!!

I would get the vet to investigate if there are any sores (other than the normal dried skin shedding) though or if a wash and some baby oil doesnt ease the irritation....
