Our new 11.2 gelding was caught mounting the 13.1 mare today. She is a real tart when in season and was difficult to ride at the weekend, she just goes up a notch. The gelding has been with us about 2 weeks and only put in with the 2 mares this week (he's obviously made a big impression!),

Should I be concerned about this, risk if infection etc or is it not uncommon, I've had mixed herds before but they've never got this friendly before. The mare was on Ostress last year which helped her mood so will put her back on that but your thoughts please. Is it likely to be a novelty thing because he is new or will the problem get worse?

Chill - he is only playing the horse equivlent of doctors and nurses... they will be pretending to do it for about 4 or 5 days - then the novilty will wear off - then the season will stop - then the boys will hate the girls again and vice versa - then you will think - what am i worrying about. So leave poor Romeo to his Juliet - it wont last long honest ! and its normal

Our 20 year old gelding started up with this when friend's new mare arrived nearly 18 months ago. Had never expressed any interest in anything else in his life so suffice to say it was a bit of a surprise... Novelty wore off after a while and no harm done to the pair - but friend had an interesting time explaining it to young daughter who caught sight and then there was the matter of the three ripped rugs before he *did* leave off...

I'd not worry at all, my old gelding used to regularly play "daddy" but never actually got his dinky out, just basically mounted then slid off, I have seen a gelding who literally goes the whole hog but I still wouldn't worry about it so long as there's no kicking or biting.

OK thanks, I feel a bit better now, I wonder if he'll try it with the 14.3 arab, he might need a step ladder! There's no kicking she's more than willing, in fact he wasn't interested but I think she's worn the poor bugger down!

Now we know why it is called the "mounting block" lol - can just imagine him pulling it into the middle of the field and saying "you stand there and when i neigh bend your knees !"

It isn't uncommon, and is one of the main reasons I rarely mix mares and geldings, having lost a mare due to injuries caused by an over-sexed gelding I am very careful nowadays. Fortunately the only gelding I have is only 32" high and the mares loathe him.

With a small gelding I wouldn't be unduly worried, as long as he isn't chasing her about all the time. Some mares are complete slappers, if a mare stands, then she is willing and the risk of injury, should he cover her properly, is slight. If she doesn't want to play then short of totally immobilising her she isn't going to let him have his way with her and he is more likely to be injured than her.

If he had been a much larger, heavier horse then I would have said that I would separate them.
