"Gelding" serving mares!

I've just seen our recently-purchased 6 year old "gelding" serving a mare in the field. He is turned out with other geldings and mares and although he is quite protective of the mares on occasion, he is not overly aggressive towards the other boys.

Two questions: if he was cut recently,(say within last 6-12 months) will his stallion instincts eventually subside or will he always want to serve mares? We are not sure if he ever served in his previous life or when he was cut.

If he is a rig, could the mare still get pregnant?

Apologies if there are threads on this subject, but no time to surf!

Thank you

Ha ha! Sorry I know it isn't funny butp my naughty gelding did this!!! He was cut very early and we didn't know he knew what to do!!!

If heis a rig yes she could well be pregnant. Get him tested and get vet out for her too...

My 4 year old gelding was cut in November and he did the great escape yesterday and got in with my old mare. He now has no excuses when it comes to learning to jump! He to must of spent the day covering my mare or trying to as she had muddy hoof marks all over her back, was in season all of a sudden and he was standing there with it alll out! Not pleasant! I took him to get cut and saw the little package they had taken out in a bag so I will be ringing my vet today when I get 5 minutes to find out why he would still be doing this and I am a bit worried as he had retained a testicle that they managed to find quite far up inside him. He has never been oout with mares before apart from being with mum and has never covered! Naughty boys!

Ok... I am a little worried now!!
My mare has recenbtly moved yards and has gone in with 2 other mares and a gelding and he keeps mounting her!
I didn't think rigs could still get them pregnant (How best would I know if it is a rig or not as apparently he has never done it before?) and I would be VERY concerned if he did get her pregnant as she has ringbone which we are sure is due to poor confirmation and so I wouldn't want to breed from her... Apart from the fact I do not have the money or facilities to do so!!

Will be keeping an eye on this thread!!!

I think most geldings still have Doing The Deed at the very back of their minds - I clearly remember years ago turning out assorted livery and riding school ponies (some in their late teens and all males gelded on time) on a Sunday afternoon (they went out in a 50 acre field as a herd), only for a Mass Shagathon to start. Especially embarrassing when our parents turned up to collect us...

Most geldings I know will try and have a go if the mare is indicating very, very strongly...I'd guess that this weird weather may have some mares coming into season with more oomph than usual? I think there's been a few threads recently about mares suddenly being very mareish.

I've known quite a few very well gelded boys enthusiastically putting it about with the girls over the years. We used to have donkeys in the adjoining paddock and one would spend a happy morning with a real "broomhandle" serving one of the jennies. There is no doubt he was doing the business even if he was firing blanks and always looked distinctly tired and happy when he got down :). His owner confirmed that he had been done properly.

Our old welshie used to do this but only with the one mare - we think they were in love - and he was not a rig but he was cut when he was seven. But he never showed any agrresion he only did the deed with this on emare :)

Funnily enough I mentioned this on the mixed herds thread, as there were plenty of naughty boys and girls on a yard I was at. None of the mares ever got pregnant, some of the geldings only did it for a day or two, and others were up for it at all times (mares and geldings!).

The one thing that would really concern me (once checked he's not a rig) is injuries. The mare could end up with a bad back if he is consantly mounting her, and he could hurt himself too.

You might find once she is out of season, he never tries again.

Our donkey has been known to mount the horses (he's been gelded) and I've even seen a couple of 'lesbian' mares who would mount each other when at a loose end in the paddock...lol so it might well just be a bit of over enthusiasm and nothing to worry about!

It may be because of the move and he is unsettled (sounds like a right royal excuse doesn't it? :D). Doesn't sound like a rig from your description. Hopefully he will just settle down.

One of my geldings was an absolute disgrace :eek::cool:

Jack has been seen attempting mount poor old Rocket (also gelding) in the past...

I think that's more to do with the fact that a.) he is a little bit thick, and b.) Conker is not a woman to contend with.

My 10 year old gelding who was cut at 5 months was spotted trying to cover his own mother. Although he is fairly dominant he's not at all aggressive or riggish, just has a good memory I guess.

Anyone know how to explain to a horse why incest is a Bad Thing?

I know it wouldn't be funny had something come out of this debacle, but I have to say it did make me giggle!! No suggestions though I'm afraid :D

If he was cut Nov time, his testrone levels will be leveling off,if cut properly no way can he get mare pregs but some geldings do mount and serve some mares. My old gelding did this many years ago on my old mare, just the one week when she really was heavily in season and never bothered with her daughters, but she was the one who kept pestering him,but I've never heard of a rig sireing foals.

Rigs usually cannot impregnate mares. Geldings often serve mares, and where's the harm in that? Brings a smile to everyone's face........

Actually, it didn't bring a smile to my face when I was leading my mare up the field and a gelding kept repeatedly jumping on her back.
It didn't bring a smile to my face to see him up to the whatnots inside her either.
The way he tried to get me out of the picture didn't bring a smile to my face either.

It can be a dangerous situation leading to injuries to both horses and handlers.

He kept her continuously on the move, nipping at her from her blind side (she has one eye) and she was stressed and tucked up. That most certainly did NOT bring a smile to my face.

My boy took a massive liking to a 11hh mare a couple of years ago. She was in a different field down a hill, so he'd gallop to the gate, jump it (4ft) and serve her for ages while she merrily kept on grazing  Poor little girl! I had to remove him from the field until the mares were moved. He's definitely not a rig.

This is why I just don't do mixed herds.

Bet it would bring a smile to anyone's face to watch their gelding get lambasted and injured by a mare. Time for nasty mare thread and how mare owner needs to pay up for hurting Pookie. But it's all cute when a mare's getting jumped on. Well I personally don't want my mate getting a nasty infection from Pookie's boy bits thank you. I keep my mares separate from any geldings. Well I have one gelding. For his saftey and theirs. Personally if a gelding is jumping all over my mares they will get more than they bargained for. There not all in season at the same time so there will always be one to put a PITA gelding in place.

Give me stallions and mares any day. At least you know exactly what you get. We have a gelding here that can't even see other mares and of course the whole damn place runs around him. My best field borders his. Can't even put barrier wire because her horse just runs the fence all day long. So to make life simple my gelding lives there. One gelding and the place with 12 other horses runs all around him and his special needs.

No not funny, my lad hurt a mare mounting her, she was cut to ribbons by his shoes, he was barefoot until a week before, she had massive bites on her neck and was in shock, took some persuading to walk to the stables bless her, we offered to pay vets bill and had the laddo rig tested, he was clear.
The YO wouldn't seperate the sexes so we left, my lad lived with mares for 2 years with no problems
