Hi, I have a 5 yr old Connemara gelding. I got him in January & his passport says gelding. Over the summer he grew balls!!!!! So today he was booked into be gelded ( he has never displayed any signs of being a stallion, or shown any interest in mares.......vet looked at him twice over the summer) all sedated.......and the balls arn't it's fluid!!!! Bloods have been taken but am confident he's not a rig.......
has anyone heard of this, or had it happen to a horse of theirs?????

One of mine did that. I had him gelded at 11 months and I know that two definitely were removed as I assisted with the operation.
But several months later, when he was letting everything hang out on a hot day, to my horror I saw what looked like an extra one! After feeling around it seemed as though he actually had one and a half..

I had the vet out and he confirmed that it wasn't either a testicle or a hernia, I can't remember exactly what he called it, but it wasn't completely unusual and was harmless.

He is three now and still looks entire but doesn't act it.

Yes, I've had a gelding have something show about six months after gelding. I saw him gelded myself - I was there, and saw everything come off. Vet has checked him since, and it was purely fluid. Gelding in question is definitely gelding like in behaviour too - not at all how he was when entire.

I am so glad to read this! My gelding has something similar and I thought I was imagining things....he has what looks like 1 semi-descended testicle, but I definitely saw the 2 offending objects removed with my own eyes ;) (although done on 2 separate occasions because of an idiotic vet, but that's a whole 'nuther story...)

Mine did this as well! It was a long time ago and I don't remember the details but I got him checked by the vet who said not testicles and pretty much at his "old age" not to worry about it- he lived a further 15 years so did no harm whatever it was caused by.
How strange though, I'd never heard of anyone else having the same!

this happened with my horse when he was 5 also! was a warm day and when i was brushing him i noticed what looked like 2 testicles! Rang his breeder and asked what age he was gelded and was he sure he was properly done (ie not a rig) and he laughed at me as if i was stupid!

The swelling went down after a week or so! But i was convinced he was a rig as he is huge and had a massive neck and had some stallion like behaviour!

Alas he isnt, just a big gelding!

The swelling could be the spermatic cord coming through where the 'ring' has not closed up sufficiently after gelding. The only way of confirming this is to have the swelling scanned by a vet.

My boy also has one 'ball'.
Had to wait a week after the vetting for the bloods to be tested to confirm he wasn't a rig, which came back negative.

It is visable year round but often more noticible in warm weather.

He can at times be a little 'riggy' in behaviour but I think that's just his personality rather than any relation to the ball.

I had a vet out in the summer for something different and he was quite horrified as he had never seen anything like that before in a gelding which I found quite amusing.
