My tb gelding has had a large hematoma under his belly behind the girth for about 2 weeks now. It is quite hard and leaves a dent if I push my fingers in. His sheath is also swollen.
The vets have taken blood and tested his protein but it came back normal. When she checked his heart she did say he was dropping a beat. So she now wants to do an ecg. Anyone any ideas what this could be?

Any input much appreciated. Thank you :-)

Ps- he is 9yrs old and a former race horse.

My heart dropped when I saw this. This is the first signs my horse showed of being unwell, he was dehydrating as well so his kidneys packed up, and he couldn't be treated with the only treatment they thought would have worked. His atrium had stopped pumping and he died four days after I first saw it. Please get an ECG and into a clinic ASAP.

My horse's death was apparently the result of poisoning with lupins which also explains the colic and diarhoea he suddenly came down with, which causes heart damage. I know his story may be different to your horse's, but it isn't something I'd take a chance on.

pheme - i am so sorry for you :( i have rung the vets to book him in for an ecg i am waiting to here back from them now.
thank you so much for your reply, it is frightening but id rather be prepared. I have been searching his symptoms but i cant seem to find anything similar.

the vets i have used are known for 'jumping the gun' and diving in with 4 feet. if you have insured horses that fine but as mine arn't i was a litte sceptical it wasnt a money making plan. My usual vet is away so i didnt have much choice but to give them a ring.
thanks again and if anyone else has anything to ass please feel free x

I, sadly lost my 18yr old ex race horse to heart and liver failure who had these symptons, but his heart was all over the place which caused the liver to fail, hopfully not the case with yours.

My friends 17 year old ISH has suffered the same symptoms on and off for a year now, lump in sheath area and various large lumps around his torso. She is a human nurse so is well aware of warning signs of different kinds of organ failure, but wanted to rule out other factors before calling the vet. He hasn't had a recurrence since she stopped feeding him Alfalfa. It seems the lumps were caused by excess protein. She is obviously vigilant in checking for recurrences but so far, so good.
Have you looked at his feed? Could be something that simple - I hope it is!
