I'm after a bit of advice really.

I may be buying a miniture shetland 1year old colt - entire.

Approx. how much does gelding cost and what sort of age ect should it be done? any after care advice too, welcome!

thanks

As soon as both testicles are fully descended! Some colts you can geld at 5 months - others may need to wait until 18 months or even two years so before you buy, it's an important thing to check because just because his testicles haven't fully descended does NOT mean he is infertile or less of a nuisance!!

There is always the risk, too, that one testicle WON'T descend - which means a much more invasive (and expensive) operation. As to costs, my vet charges me about £120 - but it does vary enormously - I've heard of some charging £250 for a straight-forward castration. So talk to your own vet.

For after-care - not much! My vet gives antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and leaves antibiotics with me for follow-up. Some don't bother. They need to be out in a (clean) field for exercise to minimise swelling - and you need to keep an eye out for infection. Also should NOT be let near mares for at least 6 weeks after gelding!
