Geldings and Beans....Help!

I hope no one is having beans for tea!!! but i am needing help/advice here.

Tonight i finally got round to checking for a bean with my gelding.....he actually obliged much more than i thought considering he is soo ticklish and hates being groomed!!
But he let me look and sure enough he has a bean....but it looks to be absolutely massive....i mean massive. I certainly couldnt free it and it seemed to fill the whole of the head.
I couldnt get it to move. Bless him he stood perfectly still and let me do this.

In the end i had to leave it as it was 8.20pm and i was meant to be home at 7.30!!

How do i go about getting it out?? It seems to big to pull out...or am i just being a wimp? It also seems VERY hard and dry.

Sorry to put you all of your tea! (im now re thinking my curry that will be here in 5 mins!!) But any advice, help would be appreciated!

baby oil....

leave for a few days

then hand up and gently prise out... (guess who gets this job with EVERYONES geldings..oh and mares.. and the odd colt!)

personally i get the vet in lol x
i clean regularly but he still gets one and when the vet is on yard i just give her a wee nod hee hee x

Mick had 3 in his, I just put my finger in the hole and sort of worked it round and they popped out.

Is it vital to clean your gelding down there? I never had, nor have I heard of people around me doing it, and I always though you should leave it, as they could sort themselves out? If it is necessary, could someone please explain to me how to do it? My gelding is fine with me brushing round his shealth, and have sometimes squirted the hose round his shealth, and he doesn't care, but rarely actually drops it?

ive always used it, for my big horse, i did have to embark on a rubber glove as it really was gross.. big black chunk... yuk yuk yuk...

just down the road.. ud be amazed at what one can charge for willey cleaning!

Motor took til he was about 26 to develop a bean and he had his removed by the Vet as it was very big .... he had to be sedated to have his teeth done, so the Vet whipped it out at the same time

He was a little sore and there was a little bit of blood, however it was ok the next day

Apparently they can get as big as a golf ball

I can post a picture of Motor's if you like!!

I feel like a really bad owner now, having never done it; maybe that is why he never gets his willy out . Can anyone explain how to clean it/get out the bean, and will tackle this task tomorrow, or the day after, which might make him happier

Personally I say DON'T MESS! Very few geldings need a helping hand with sheath cleaning, it is when you start to fiddle around that you then have to continue....

As for the bean...well if your horse is uncomfortable peeing, call the vet, otherwise I would leave alone!

I agree .... my Vet says you should leave well alone and never use Sheath cleaner and if you have to, just use water.

I tend to just 'pick' bits off and that is all

Hmm he is oing to be vaccinated and teeth done under sedative in the next 3 weeks so maybe i will wait untill then and see what the vet reckons.....i dont want to hurt him and it does seem huge!
Will have another look tomorrow.

Well folks I’m happy to report that I have at long last managed to remove Mr Bean from Mr Sausage today from my big chestnut!!! The only difference was that he was wearing his flymask and couldn’t really see me (ha ha) so as soon as the new shavings went down in his bedroom, out came Mr Sausage (I didn’t have time to get the headcollar…. very brave of me!) and as soon as he finished weeing I dived in and there it was almost the size of two lemon bon bons shot out!... not quite golfball size!! It only took me less than 15 secs to do the deed but has taken me over 2 months to get this far!!!!

I managed to do my 28 year old (horse) a while back when there was lots of posts on this subject – he was such a good patient. So that’s 2 down and 1 to go… midi Shetland next (that will be fun!) – I think I’ll have to hunt for the head torch and pair of knee caps would be useful to get down that low…. any suggestions?

This bean malarky is doing my head in! What is is? Is it dangerous? Is it necessary to remove? Why remove it at all?

My vet has always said to leave things well alone in his sheath area and Archies seems to look after itself.

Come on, someone enlighten me ... an idiots guide would be good x

The bean is a build up of 'stuff' (very technical word you know, but sure others will know exact terms!) that can be found in a male horses man bits. Its usually white/frey and bean shaped. It can sometimes affect them peeing so from what I understand it is important to remove. But everyone has varying views on the subject

I can clean my boy's outer bits, but only with baby wipes - forget the sponge or hose, oh yes - my friend held up his front leg, but he still cow kicked me, leaning on the wall for support. So baby wipes it is.

BUT as soon as Mr Pink drops, usually at some very inconvenient time, I get gently hold of it, and try and get "in there", BANG it suddenly goes back into the black hole. I have no doubt Mr Bean is in there, considering what else lurks in the depths, but I'm not gonna manage it without the vet.

Does anyone know if they can eventually break down and out on their own ?

removing the 'bean' isn't really the same as cleaning the sheath. My boys never get their willies cleaned but they do get the bean checked for every couple of months.

Why wait until they are uncomfortable? And how would you tell if pee-ing is uncomfy? It's such an awkward looking process anyways!

OP - did you try squeezing it out? Grab the tip and gentle 'milk it out'. or sometimes it's possible to break the bean up before squeezing it out.

I know a gelding who was showing signs of gastric ulcers - grumpy when tacked up and kicking out when the legs applied. After much money and investigation later, he had his sheath cleaned and THE most enormous bean was found and removed under sedation. No more grumping seen!
