My poor horse has had it rough recently!!

Last weekend I noticed then when he is in his stable he hangs his willy out a lot and dribbles pee from it, normally he goes into his stable and has one big pee, puts his doodah away and munches his tea, but now when I am mucking out/watching him in his stable it hangs out and he dribbles every so often, he also hangs it out when he is stood tied up, but no pee comes out.

I have never cleaned it properly, there is some smegma on it, but nothing bad, I had a look this morning, and it is not swollen hot or red/raw?? Anything I can do/give him to help???

Also he is not straining to pee, and his bed is as wet as normal, so I dont think he is having difficulty, but I am a little worried after watching him this morning, literally evenr 2 mins he was dribbling!!

Agree it sounds like a vet job!

If it is the 'bean' then it can be painful to push it out by hand so sedation is necessary.

I would get him checked out today rather than wait for an expensive bill and call out over the weekend

Good luck and let us know how he gets on!

I have cleaned it, and found a huge bean, about the size of the end of my thumb, so an inch long and about the same wide... poor boy, waiting for the vet to call and I will have a chat with them, and see what they think!

Quick update - Vets advised me to try and get a urine sample, which I did and dropped it with them, they have had a look at it and are quite baffled, its pretty concentrated and there are clumps of crystals in it.

So it has been sent for analysis, and hopefully will get the results by Tuesday. In the mean time I am to keep him on the same food/turn out etc and try to get him drinking lots, so will buy some apples for him to bob in his water and maybe some apple juice!!

Thank you for advice!!

Firstly well done on getting a urine sample!!! My gelding had urine crystals about 6 weeks ago and the PH in his urine was high 8.5. Since then I have done lots of research. Vets remedy was to give Vitamin C which makes the urine more acidic and therefore dissolving the crystals. My chap didn't seem too bad. The crystals were like sand particles and his only symptom was doing funny things with his willy. He never seemed to urinate excessively or dribble. It seems geldings and stallions are more prone to this. I have also started giving him Apple Cider Vinegar which is acidic too. Cut out Beet Pulp and Alfalfa if feeding. I also discovered Global Herbs have a remedy called EaziPee which is a kidney tonic and specifically dissolves bladder/kidney stones. I only got my hands on a tub of it yesterday so I don't have any feedback. My horse showed very little symptoms except he was edgy in himself and the first blood test showed low white cell count which has now returned to normal. He is really well in himself and the vet is not concerned. Feel free to PM me as it seems we are in the same boat!!!

BTW - Letting it all hang out is a symptom of urine crystals!!! Amazing what you find out when you have to!!

Can only speak from human point but usually as the ph in urine rises its because of infection and a reaction from Urease an enzyme released from some bacteria which causes urine to become more alkaline and crystal formation/mineral deposits.

I have no idea what the ph of horse urine should be etc but sounds like an infection? Hopefully he will flush it out but roll on Tuesday then.

Good luck, let us know as intrigued now. Hope he is ok.

Right, a quick update!

Vets sent Bs urine sample off to be analysed and they called today saying not to worry, he has crystals made of calcium carbonate which is normal, but can be caused by an alfalfa, so I am going to ask about our haylege tomorrow, it has now been sent to screen for infection! But B is fine in him self, drinking and seems to be peeing fine now I took out his bean, so we shall see what the vet says, but at the moment I am inclined to think that B was having trouble peeing because of the bean and the crystals are normal for him!

Will keep you posted!

YUCK..get a mare!
Not always the cleaner of the 2 - I have one of each and cleaning all the gunk off my girls back legs during every season is worse than a quick wipe of my geldings 'doo-dah' (which he helpfully flops out whilst eating his dinner and is more than happy for me to 'handle it' whilst cleaning )!

P.S this is not the best thread to be replying to when sat in your non horsey families house!!
