I have myself in a strange situation, needing some advice and was told to try here!
Going to try and keep it short because it is a very very long story!
I have purchased (put a deposit down) on a TB who will arrive in the new year end of january and when I was seeking somewhere for her to be kept I came across a place opposite where a friend has been caring for some horses and long story short I have managed to volunteer my help with these horses.
Not going to say too much as don't want to tread on peoples toes should they come across this thread, but the group consists of 2 cob types, a native type and a thoroughbred, there is also 2 welsh type ponies however they are too be sold.
Before I explain the situation, please understand the reason I have not made a quick decision is because now I have had a discussion with horses owners, I shall be keeping my new horse where the aforementioned horses are which will be alot better, cheaper and easier for both horse & I, so I don't want to make a wrong move and end up without that option hence why some advice would be great.
Originally I was told the 2 cobs, tb and native could be treated as my own if I wanted to have a play with them as they were having nothing done with them and owner didn't have time nor health due to being pregnant.
One of the cobs has a big story behind him, and I shall try to explain this as best I can....
He is 4 years old, and current owner is actually a foster mum because proper owner gave him to her on loan because she was ill and didn't have the time for him, she refused to sell him because she bought him as a foal and owned him until he was 2?!?! She DID however on paper agree to pay all feed costs and trimming costs, over a period of 18 months she has not paid a penny and current foster mum has been paying for it all, it has now got to a stage where foster mum has seeked legal advice and understands that she can take ownership of said cob so she has given the real owner a month to pay what she owes and take the horse back or she will be looking to full loan him to me. I agreed I would take him on full loan with view to buy because as you can see by picture below he is beautiful, just a bit of a state as he was stabbed when he was 2, not long after he was broken so was turned away to mature and get some trust again but noones bothered with him! I have a real soft spot for cobs and it hurts me to see him so wasted when he is so beautiful, and he has 3 fantastic paces, a jump to die for (after seeing him jump the fence a few times!!) and he really has a nature that could have you there with him all day!
Now onto the TB, well she was described as being a complete angel as even the teenager rides him, and yes to tack up she was fantastic, stood there like a pro and didn't bat an eyelid, but I knew as soon as I got on her I could feel a ticking time bomb below me. I gently asked for a faster walk as she was almost going backwards, and then thats what she did, she went backwards at speed. I stood her still, gave her a pat and asked her to walk on, she walked on great, but when asked for a trot, she would buck and refuse. Eventually I had her going okayish in the field just at a good paced walk with the odd trot, but to say she was fizzy is a massive understatement, she was jogging everywhere, throwing herself about and generally being a pain.
I don't think I would put it down to pain as they appear to have her checked and shod reguarly, the issue is she is a 16.2 thoroughbred that only gets ridden every once in a blue moon and when she is ridden she is galloped like a racehorse everywhere by a tiny little girl. She hacks out lovely when she is with the pony but if asked to stand she backs up at speed and generally starts being an ass, and this is becoming a problem as the roads where we hack she needs to stop on a regular basis.
They refused to listen to me when I explained she bucked and was generally really fizzy and they claimed its because of my weight! (I am roughly 11 and a half stone). They said shes not used to weight on her, but then said to me to ride her whenever I wanted!
I then had a message saying not to ride the tb anymore because apparently she was fired up and kicked out when being tacked up, ON THE SAME EVENING as I had ALREADY ridden her out with the pony. I'd kick out if I was only worked once in a blue moon and someone came to ride me for an hour then someone else came to ride again!! And they know I was riding her as I made them fully aware of the days I was going to.
As you can see what I am trying to say is I have ended up letting myself in for what looks like it is going to be a nightmare but then at the same time there are 4 horses here that are having nothing done with them, are all very talented and I just can't sit by and watch them go to waste.
The owners have alot of money to spare and are in and out of the country so the horses are literally never bothered with, the suspicion is that they have not been fed over christmas either.
I like the owner she seems lovely but very un-horsey, she obviously buys them because she has the money but doesn't understand the care that comes with it, but I do appreciate the fact she took the cob on that the lady couldn't care for but he is only 4 and really needs to be doing something, hence why I will have him on full loan if this becomes the option.
How should I go about this situation, I really don't know, I needed to rant more than anything. Just don't understand why people have horses and don't treat them like they are breakable glass because they deserve nothing less, and these horse are fantastic in temperment, they just need to be working!
