I am going to assume it's a mains generator (240 volts).

Without getting too technical, if you are looking at either conventional 60 Watt lamps (bulbs) or fluorescent tubes of say 70 Watts, then that generator will easily cope with 5 or 6 of them.

Sorry to 'borrow' the post CAHILL - in same position as you - no electrics!

Is is possible to charge up Leisure batteries from a petrol driven generator, say, once a week, and then run 2 100w light bulbs off those batteries for 30mins daily?

I hate doing everything by the light of a pathetic head torch!!

OK. Mains as in the electricity that we all get supplied with in our houses is 240 Volts. BUT, generators are also used in the construction industry (when building our houses) and they commonly use 110 Volts.

So, what you are looking for is 950 Watts at 240 Volts, (which will be around 4 amps)

As lighting is expressed in Watts, it is pretty easy, BUT if you are getting fluorescent lighting, allow some extra Watts as there are some extra bits of gubbins in a fluorescent light fitting which also use electricity.

Either way, you have plenty of power (Watts) for six lights.

£99 looks good for a mains generator (although I have never bought a genny), but just do a quick search on the net, as there are often trade deals on the go.

I think you'll find that when the term 'Mains Genetator' is used it means it generates 240v (as per the mains).

Depending on how many lights you may want to run off the generator I would be tempted to use the energy saving bulbs as you will be able to run more lights. Using the low energy bulbs you can have a 20w bulb that is the equivalent of a 100w conventional bulb.

Incidentally I was in either Currys or Comet a week ago & they were selling the low energy bulbs, all wattage, at 49p each.

We have 1KW Kipor portable genny- from an Ebay shop
have mains at yard, but for use when overnighting in lorry, it alos includea 12v battery charge option.

pertol, portable 'suitcase' style, so its extra quiet, very easy start and I can carry it easily
It will also run tv, electric drill, main clippers etc
Also cosider those 11 watt low energy light bulb fittings.
Don't forget that cheaper ones iwll be petrol, not diesel, and run for about 5 hours on five litres.

If you want to run lights off a 12v leisure battery, get 12 volt flourescent caravan ones, fit them up and wire to where you can leave your battery in a safe place.
And it may be worth looking at solar powered lighting

Yes you could run lights from a leisure battery, but you would need caravan type lighting, which is designed to run from batteries or mains. Unfortunately, you also need another little gizmo called an inverter and these can be expensive.

I am not sure how long the batteries would last, as a lot would depend on their size and capacity (which just to confuse is expressed in amp / hours).

Go and have a little chat with your local caravan accessory shop, then figure out a cheaper way of getting the bits (ebay?).

That WOLF one looks very good-
a couple of good leuisure batteries would cost as much, and
then you would need to buy 12 volt lighting

Remember you will be running 240 volt system, so get an elecrticina to fit up a run of low energy outdoor standard lights, and a cable /plug to plu into your generator-
it will be LIVE proper electircityy.
And store you fuel in a safe petrol container, and only fill the genny using a funnel when it is cold ( the genny cold, not the weather! ;-) ).
When in use, have it outside, well ventilated, as it will have an exhaust and get hot.
