I need to get one but haven't a clue about them and there seems to be a wide range out there at huge prices!!

Any recommendations?

I need to be able to run a kettle, microwave, phone charger, leisure battery charger - not all at the same time though.

A kettle takes around 1.8kw to boil - unless it's one of those tiny car ones - so you need a pretty powerful generator for that 1500-2000watt. You would get away with a smaller one but the kettle would take forever. Everything else is not too high a draw. We have a 2500 watt one that can run the tv/satellite box, fridge freezer, lighting and the neighbours freezer when we have a power cut. It could boil the kettle too if the fridges are both not drawing. It's pretty good and I could use it to run the washing machine and or 950 microwave (not at the same time!) if we were off grid.

Add up the wattage of all the things you might want to use at any one time and look for a generator that can supply that power. Had you though of a photovoltaic charger for the leisure battery (which you then use to charge the mobile)?

my OH has a couple, i was asking about them the other day....he recommends getting one that can run on red diesel /bio deisel and not petrol, as they are so much cheaper to run. they cost more to buy i think he said, but work out cheaper in use
