Surely the amount of pats he got coming out of the ring let him know exactly what a fantastic job he'd done?

I agree with you - he was so chuffed and thanked everybody on TV - the horse, the owners, his family, anyone who knew him etc.......
Thought it was lovely that he sent the letter in, and it got published.
