Hi

Has anyone ever used a german Hackamore i tryed it on a trotter of mine as he was not very responcive in his mouth, but i am wondering if it is to harsh and whether i can compete him in it

. He seemed to go well in it, but i put 2 sets of reins on it so i cold ither ride him just on the nose or the curb and poll pressure

I rode in a version of a German hackamore for a long while on one of my horses but I didn't like it. The reason for using it at the time was that he had had some serious dental work done so couldn't be bitted for a long while. I find hackamores to give a 'wooden' feel and I don't have the connection that I like with the bit. However, it gave us very good results when show-jumping as he hated bit pressure.
I used single reins and competed in it but that wasn't in the UK so not sure whether it's legal here.

I use a german hackamore on my horse, he has serious mouth hang ups (mental more than physical!) I agree with the wooden feeling, but tbh if a horse is leaning on your hand with a bit its much more wooden than one than runing on its nose. Once you get used to the lack of 'feel' it works quite well. Never did Boomerang any harm!

Hi K.

Depends on what you want to compete in, jumping is OK I believe, showing and dressage not so.

I think the Germans are harsher than the 'English' clunky style ones, but it depends on the horse, and, the hands on the reins (I'll say it before anyone else does) I tried one on Ali once (as he was too strong in the English out hunting remember?) and even with no contact he refused to go forwards and stood up on end, and he NEVER did that when ridden. Didn't try it again.

If it works on your horse then that's fine, was he a raced trotter?

How did you go on at Cothi Bridge?

Yea he was a racing trotter to a very high standard won alot but now in retirement with me and i found him leaning on me and when you pull a trotter they are spose to go faster as i have been told so i put a normal hackamore but found it wasn't quite enough so saw a german hackamore in llanybydder so thoght i'd try it and he went well in it but i thought if i had 2 reins on it i could judge how he was going and how much pressure he needed. i'v only ridden him in it once so i'm going to try it again 2mro and see, but he's a big boy to try and stop if he run off with me as he's 16.2 and built well u'd love him. and he's handsome.

As for cothi mare went fantastic but the ground was awfull so we were bogged down going into a doubble and knocked poles as we went through so had 8 faults but out of 14 there were only 2 clears so i wasn't worried if i had seen the grond the day before i woudn't have taken her, but were at the welsh show this weekend doing the x race horse and the workers sarah and i are against each other again
