My pony's passport is from the German Equestrian Federation, in Germany, and is all in German. I have translated a few bits of it to try and piece her history together but I need to get her registered in my name.
Anyone know the best way to do this?
Do I send the passport back to Germany (there is an address on the passport)?
But if I do that (with a covering letter) will they even be able to read it in English to be able to issue an ownership change?
And do they do recorded delivery to foreign countries incase it gets lost in the post?
Any help appreciated.

dont know if this helps you but i have a westphalian german passport (i think!) anyway i got in touch with the british hannoverian society who basically said just to write my own details! so you might want to get in touch with them.

My horses passport is in Dutch and I've never had any problems using it. I've spoken to others with dutch horses and they said they didn't send thm back to Holland as it costs money there to re-register. The only proibelm I had was with his vetting cert as this was also in Dutch. I has to translate it for the Insurance company even though it was pretty obvious that all the ticks were either "goed", "normaal" or in the list of complaits all ticked "neit".

i never had to send my passport anywhere. i spent months trying to figure out what i was supposed to do and everyone i spoke to told me to speak to someone else, in the end i was doing circles. so yes i really just wrote my name in the passport. i have had vets look at it at the royal veterinary college and they didnt have a clue.
where did you get your pony from was it straight from germany or was there a previous english owner?

i am sure someone else will know there must be other german passports around the uk?

My pony came straight from Germany. It did change ownership on it's passport and the new owner's name was just stuck on but it did have a passport office stamp accross it, so it must have been done "proper".
Might just have to write my name in it, just don't want to invalidate any insurance, as per that below post!

is it a paticular breed? if so the pio over here should do it.

However, if you want to get in contact with PIO in germany, I would send them a email/letter, and translate it using one of the free things on the net.

No she isn't any particular breed, so might do as you say and send an email/letter after having it translated. Although I'll get a german one back won't I, but I'll just have to translate that too!

So if everyone buys a horse and just writes in their name etc to show change of ownership what would stop say someone not quite so honest i.e. maybe a dodgy dealer or even a thief just doing the same. I know that may sound extreme but I would definately try and get in touch with someone to get this done properly or if you have no luck I would contact one of the passport issuers over here and ask there advice and get a new passport done.
If you buy a KWPN or OLdenburg or Westphalian etc you send them back to them in their respective countries and they will change them for a small fee. The KWPN now don't actually ask for the passport to be sent back but will transfer ownership on their database and send you a authorising stamp to put in the passport.
Passports were developed to help horses and there owners so god forbid there was anything that happened to your horse and the passport was checked and traced back to the issuer if you only write in your name how would you actually prove that you were the owner?

I see you are making a very valid point that is makes no sense to just be able to write in the passport. Although it does state on passports (as least on mine it does, and in English too) that a passport is not proof of ownership. It is meerly a means of identifing a horse or pony. Personally I am not sure I see the point in them anyway, if you can just apply for a new one from another passport agency.

Hi, You didn't mention what breed she is but there is an equivalent society in this country for each breed. I imported a Hanoverian Mare from Germany then forwarded her passport to The British Hanovarian Society whom stamped it with their stamp charged me £25 and returned it with my name in it as current owner. You should have a signed section either in the passport or on the Pedigree Papers from the previous owner (transfer of ownership) that you need to send in. It is illegal to write anything or change anything in the passport yourself so don't be tempted to do this, it must be stamped by an authorised society with the amendment.
