Hi, I'm thinking about buying a young Westphalian horse that has recently been imported from Germany.

I've seen his passport, which all seems fine except it doesn't have any name on it, which I thought was a bit strange. It has all the breeding details and identification stuff which corresponds to the horse in question.

Has anyone else ever encountered this? And if I buy him what would I need to do to get a name included in the passport?

Any advice gratefully received!

I imported a german hannoverian as a 5 year old and the name space on his passport wasn't filled in. Was no problem, everything was in order and it was definately the right passport etc. You can email the breed society the passport number to see if the breeder ever named the horse or you can just pick a name and add it.

Hi. I brought a 5 yr old Haflinger that was imported from Germany. She has a Westphalian passport - but there was no name - but all the other details (description. breeding lines etc.) were on there.

I contacted them and they did have a name registered for her - it just wasn't on the passport. I guess that was because she was named after being branded & given a passport at 6 months old.

I would contact them and see if they have any record of a name. They were very helpful to me and replied in English without any problems.

Normally when a horse is being registered with its breeding association it is given a name. As a new owner you can still change it with relative ease (need to pay the relevant renaming fees) but it is easiest if it had no off-spring yet (otherwise it can cause confusion with the stud books).

When there is no name on the horse passport, see if you could obtain a copy of the owners certificate. Breeding associations require either a copy of the owners certificate or the sale contract together with the horse passport to register change of ownership. Then it is much easier to change anything.

If the horse is registered with the FN (the German riding association) and it had entered competitions already, then it is much more admin work to get the name changed. But I guess that's not the situation in your case?
