I've been asked to help find a good home for a friends family pet German Shepherd dog. Sadly, his owner died in the last month, who was my friend's mother in law. My friend cannot take him in as they both work full-time, have a small house and a baby daughter - atm her partner is going up to the house several times a day to walk, feed and fuss the dog.

He's a 6 year old long haired GS - PM me for more details. They don't want anything for him, just a good home.

Yep, they've already tried all the rescue centres and the German Shepherd rescue - all full or not taking on any more just now. The lady at our local GSR is aware of him and actively looking for a foster home.

Will put up some pics when I get them - just had to empty my e-mail inbox! He's a proper fluffy bear - it's so sad.

How sad, was in a similar situation earlier this year trying to help someone rehome his fathers bitch who was 11. In the end the son decided to keep her. Have gsd rescue put his details on their website? What part of theE Midlands are you in, I will certainly bear him in mind if anyone asks me about a dog, is he good with other dogs?

Not sure on other dogs - I will find out - he kept a 72 year old lady company and has a good bark on him. He's very good with women and children - wary of men at first but fine after introductions.
He's in Derby - thanks for any help MM.

It may also be worth joining a rescue site and potting his details uo under dogs seeking home home section, I will PM u the web sites when I get the addys.(I do forget these things

so dont hesitate to remind me if u need them)

Also put a poster in vets with his picture, description and state vaxed, chipped and neutered, if he is not neutered I would advice this b4 he goes, so u can be sure he is agoing as a pet and not a free breeding prospective, and charge a donation if he has all of the mentioned done, it;s better then saying free to good home and then anyone can take him, also state home visit to be carried out and go and meet prospective owners and check for a secure garden.
The vets is a good place to start as people are losing dogs and posters catch their eye if considering a new dog.

Another one that might be worth trying is Cinnamon Trust. They are supposed to help in just such cases when an older has died or is terminally ill. I say supposed because they wouldn't help in the case I mentioned above as the owner was a year too young at 64 to fit their criteria

Definitely worth asking them though.
Agree with Cala about checking prospective homes, asking for references etc, unfortunately GSDs can so easily end up going as guard dogs.

Thanks Caila and MM - I will certainly pass on your advice. I know they were planning on updating his vaccs and getting him neutered and would definitely check out potential new owners.
