The brand will vary, depending on the country he was branded in. A German brand is two elk horns and the UK one has a triangle typer shape underneath the horns.
When I go to verden, not all the hannovarians are branded and only some have a number underneath, which I was told was related to their year of birth.
Yes he is German - he just has the double antlers and what looks to be 38 or 33 underneath. The problem I have is that his papers were 'lost' according to the 'dealer' who brought him to the UK.
His brand is quite faint so it is difficult in some lights to see it. I emailed the German Trakehner Soc with a copy of his markings and the number 38 or 33 but they said they couldn't find him. My EDT says he is about 7 or 8 but he was aged by a vet for passporting last year that placed him at 5 so would be 6 now. He has also grown 3 inches in a year!!
Is there anyway i can get some history on him, is it possible to have him DNA matched somehow?
I have ready up that they don't brand all of them and normally it is only the quality ones but again I have no idea if that is true either.
Don't know if this will help but, ours has two numbers underneath.
I was told letters are the stud name, the first number is the number of the mare and the second number is the number of foals she has had eg: number 2 (her second foal).
Don't know if this works with the German ones though, ours is Russian.
You could search the web for the German society, they might have a web page. Sometimes they put contact details on there.
It's very difficult, I know, I had to translate the Russian!!! Not easy!
Where did the dealer get the horse from? Did he import the horse? Perhaps if he told you where he came from, they might be able to give you some more details.
Yes I contacted them by email - luckily the germans are very good at english! But with the info I gave them they said they couldn't trace him.
The dealer bought him off an importer who apparently lost his papers, she said that there is no way she can get the papers - she is the most dodgy person I have met in my life - problem was I bought him as a 'private sale' from someone on the yard and had no idea the history of this woman - it has since come out int he wash!!!
Can't you even squeeze the name of the importer out of her??
Do you know roughly when he was imported? and where he landed in the UK?
It's a long shot but,....if you could maybe ring the port authority, saying that you need details of an importer who imported him on this date, could they look through the records please?
D**n just remembered he's German so in the EC, that may not work, could give it a go though.
Alternatively, if it was a well known importer have you tried a few of the specialist yards they may give you some names to ring.
I'm sorry I'm not much help, but I'll keep thinking!!
She just told me that he was who she got her sport horses from. But I assume if he 'lost' the papers then he is as dodgy as her!!
They said they had, had him for about 10 months but I got him May and the passport they had done for him was dated end Feb. Vet had also put him at a smaller size, different colour and guessed the age. He didn't even put his brand on there!!
I will try and get in contact with the German Society and see if they can point me in the direction of DNA.
