Which policy do you / your yard follow when bringing a new horse in?

Do u settle him/her in for a few days or ride out quite early on in company?

I think it depends. Some people state get on and get it over and done with. If the horse needs a bit more time to settle in then you might leave it a bit longer and do groundwork.

Personally when I got my boy, I think I had a very short ride in the school the third day he arrived (had farrier second day).

Other people will have other opinions though.

I think you have to be calm and confident when riding a new horse, and other horses as company can help (as long as they're not spooky mad things, which will do the oposite!). The horse will take confident from you and if you're not, you can sometimes end up with problems, so if you are feeling at all nervous, you should set up the first ride so that it is easier - in the school/gentle hack on quiet road with company...
