I've just spoken to a lovely lady who is one of the wives of a secretary at our local hunt for a number of someone who can come out in an emergency to pts my horse if my own vet couldn't get out to me quickly for any reason. She was so kind and said she would get him to ring me back.

She said I was wise to make these kinds of plans. But after reading all the horror stories and watching motorway cops, etc where people had to sit on top of the horse until the vets could come for an hour its made me realise vets can't always get out to you quickly and its wise to have someone else's number to call in an emergency. They resorted to calling out the armed response unit but they said it was too dangerous to shoot in the area they were in!

So if you all do only one thing today, make sure it is this. Go on your computers and get the number of your local huntsman just in case, especially as we are now coming to the holiday season. Anyone who has ever needed the vet out on a bank holiday or Christmas or Boxing Day will know where I am coming from!!

Then display the number at your yard along with the vets number and any other numbers you need in an emergency. We have our postcode and grid reference number displayed at our yard.

I did not realise that polygamy was allowed for hunt secretarys that explains much .
However it is a good idea always to have 'that' number.

I am lucky as we have a list on our livery board of numbers (and address if needed): YO's, YO's husband/son, farriers, vets, hunts, physio etc should we need them.

If you are not a follower/subscriber of the hunt I doubt the huntsman would give up his Christmas dinner to come out to you, for antisocial hours and people that don't hunt I would stick to the vet. It is a good idea though, they also tend to be much more efficient at dispatching than vets. (Shooting, anyway).
