Got a horse on loan. His back ankle has looked a bit puffy since last friday. Not huge, just a bit puffy. Bit of heat. Nothing drastic. and just the ankle - the surronding leg is fine. He lives out 24/7 - i suspect if were to come in the leg might swell up to.

He is a tiny bit lame on it - but very hard to tell.
Having been cold-hosing and not riding etc.

Mentioned it to his onwer in an email and she said "oh yeah his legs do that sometimes, it goes down in time"

I can't decide whether to get the vet out for a look or not? Any thoughts?
He is 15 if that helps

oh and said owner is coming to visit him on saturday. This is only the 2nd time she has been to visit since I got him (3months) and the first time she flipped cos he was "so thin" (he wasn't that bad, plus he was underweight when i got him, grrr)

time for the vet i think.. especially if the owner came and made a comment before with his weight... just so you dont have any come backs then you have ammo to fire back at her and say well ive had the vet! i would keep us posted

if he is in your care you do what you think is best. i would call a vet you never know whats going on and i always say it is better to be safe than sorry!

I personally would get the vet, especially since you are only loaning him. You don't want to give the owners a bad impression since they have already pulled you up on his weight they may do it with his leg (didn't mean for that to sound bad about you just I would air on the side of caution both for you and the horse).

Personally I wouldn't get the vet out just yet, partly because I am currently anti vets since my horse got broken by them.

Box rest may actually reduce the swelling, if its a bruise. Otherwise if the owner is not concerned, I wouldn't waste your money to have the vet say give it a weeks box rest or scan it!!!
