Trying to decide if my terrier is just lean or a bit skinny. He is free exercising around 7 hours a day, some of that is spent asleep and when it gets dark he puts himself to bed in my car. At home he sleeps in his crate from 8ish to morning ( obv gets loo breaks). He has bags of energy, jumps on hay bales etc but has no spare fat at all, i can feel ribs fairly easily, quarters are just muscle. He gets a JWB sachet in the morn, one for lunch and a mug full of JWB dry in the eve plus treats through the day as we are working on recall. Should i be aiming for some body fat? Ive not had a terrier before, find it easier to tell with our big dogs! He is 8 months. Thanks.

why not post a pic , very difficult to comment without seeing the dog but he is still very young and that sounds like a lot of excercise for a young dog to me even though he is a small breed...

The sachets are only 150g so they are not a lot for an active, growing terrier.
I would swap the morning one for a mug of JWB puppy instead.
JWB suggest a puppy to make 5kg should get four sachets a day & that will be for normal activity. Your pup could need double that.
I like to be able to feel a puppy's ribs without pressure but not to see them easily.

Thanks, I would post a current pic but sadly can't see anything through the fluff. When I got him I had a vet lecture me on the perils of feeding the recommended levels, that they were always far too much and that's why so many dogs were obese etc etc so it put me off. I will change his breakfast and see how he goes, I'm also not sure of his adult weight expectancy, again had a vet lecture as he had a podgy baby belly (as they do at 10 weeks!!)
