Heya just wonderign if anybody has any tips on getting a cob used to having his legs clipped? he is perfect to clip his body and face and top half of legs but when i get down to his feathers he is awfull! also bad for his ears but im not to worried about those.
We have tried sedation (sedalin and vets) and he fights it, also tried holding the opposite leg up and then he just rears or kicks out also tried keeping the clippers touching his leg when he moves away but i dont want to get hurt :S
Iv been clipping him for a few years and hes just not getting used to it

but he really does need his feathers off for various reasons

I find my lad is better with smaller clippers, so I do all his body with the main clippers and i do his legs with my trimmers (all be it a heavy duty pair).

My horse doesn’t like the vibration straight onto his bones and i find the smaller clippers don’t vibrate as much.

I brought the wolslet ones that were £46 they do his feathers as such but I have to do them over two days at first I could not clip his legs at all now I can with these with a plastic comb on I use the 6mm one if there is no comb he goes mad the vibration is slightly less and they are less noisy. I also had a friend feed him little bits of apples / carrotts / nuts when I first started and doing a bit every few days also helped alot even if you are not really cutting anything. I did cut the worst off with sissors to make it easier for the clippers, hope this helps any more Q's please ask

Clicker training worked wonders on my horse who was terrified of having his legs done - when we'd finished with him that leg was going nowhere, he was standing firm, despite what might come, for the click and treat. Well worth doing. I have a short 'essay' I can forward on if you are interested.

I have the Wahl Avalon Clippers (Moser cordless ones) and they are brill but I think you could find a cheaper options that works just as good.

I started off using 12mm then 9mm and now use 6mm I have to do them about every three weeks but beilieve this works in my favour as it keeps him used to them. Also what I do when I do a full clip is do the leg lines with my normally clippers as if I am gonig to leave them on then do the whole legs with my trimmers as they are not as close cutting. This in effect leaves you with a full clip but legs look a little darker. (and no odd lines!) Where are you I do manage to do mine on my own and have occasionally rope a couple of people in if I can
